In all of 2006, there were six homicides in the city of Lansing. In 2007, the number rose to 16. Lansing police attributed five of those deaths to a serial killer, and on May 8, 2008, Matthew E. Macon was convicted of two of those homicides.
Several neighborhoods were rocked by violence during the summer of 2007. Residents of the areas where Ruth Hallman, Debra Renfors and Deborah Kaye Cooke were killed say their neighborhoods are recovering.
