Born in Lancashire in 1969, Ken spent his formative years in Wales. After a successful career in engineering management spanning almost 20 years, he set off in September 2009 to fulfil a long-held dream to cycle solo around the world.
An experienced touring cyclist, the bicycle is, nevertheless, really just the means of travel rather than an end in itself. The real challenge is the ability to solve problems – as diverse as finding enough food to sustain the physical effort, arranging visas, dealing with changing political situations en route, to simply driving oneself forward in the face of adversity – and to gain a better understanding of people and places encountered on the journey
Inspired by his own experiences at The Outward Bound Trust’s Eskdale centre in 1985, Ken is a long-standing supporter of The Trust’s work with young people. Struck by strong resonance between the charity’s core values and those of his own forthcoming epic endeavour, he is keen to use the opportunity to help raise both awareness of, and funds for, The Outward Bound Trust.
