The Spring 2012 issue of Canadian Art features an article by Hadani Ditmars about nomadic Toronto-based artist Abbas Akhavan. This video, posted to enrich the article, deals with Akhavan's 2011 work Variations on Ghosts and Guests.
Writes Akhavan, "During my recent residency with the Delfina Foundation in Bastakiya, Dubai, I continued my exploration in domestic spaces and hospitality in a series of site-specific works titled Variations on Ghosts and Guests. The work produced during the residency was made within and in relation to the historical and contemporary use of the residency house in Bastakiya, the socioeconomics of Bur Dubai and its demographics that influenced the work’s creation and its reception. Each work references the spaces of the home, in this case the Tashkeel house, which is surrounded by bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and art galleries."
