I saw Prometheus a few times and i really enjoyed the effects. But something i wanted to try was the different moods the illumination on the movie has.

I did a little article describing how i did it for some people that asked me a few times.

First i quickly modeled my own version of a trilobite from the movie in Sculptris, actually it doesnt look like the one on the movie at all other than it has tentacles.

Then i put together a quick rig on a decimated model and skinwrapped the full res to the mid res. With that i made i small animation that i could use to set test scenes.

I tried to mimic the most relevant moods i liked on the movie in a way it rendered fast because it´s just a simple test. Used Mental Ray without Final Gather, only regular lights and Ambient Occlusion for ambient fill.

I tried to achieve most of the look directly from the renderer, i did just a few color balance touchups in after effects.

Made in 3ds Max with Mental Ray. Post work in After Effects.
