This DVD training program was developed by Dustianne North, MSW who has worked within the youth social welfare field for the last ten years. This program includes role play exercises to improve skills in adult and adolescent interactions when "Dealing with Difficult Issues".
The three training components are:
1. Basic Communication Skills and Difficult Issues
The component will provide the learner with strategies and tools to establish a positive and trusting relationship with youth.
2. Values and Communicating Around Difficult Issues
This component includes scenarios where participants will discuss potential strategies that can be used when a difficult topic is broached by a young person.
3. From Feelings to Problem Solving
This component will explore the process of moving from receiving the immediate emotions and need for support in the young person to assisting youth with finding positive solutions of their own making.
Topics discussed in this training program will include:
"Delicate Topics" such as: Peer pressure, school performance, cultural identity and personal insecurities.
"Issues of Concern" such as: Unsafe sex, delinquent behavior, fist fighting, drug and alcohol use.
"Crises" such as: Child abuse and neglect, abusive relationships, chemical dependency, depression and suicide.
