One of the best ways to see Maine is on foot, whether you want to tour one of our vibrant cities, take a day hike to a tumbling waterfall, stroll along a beach with your children or go backpacking along a stretch of the famous Appalachian Trail.
Hundreds of miles of backpacking trails reach as far as you desire to travel on foot into Maine’s woods and mountains, where an excellent system of shelters and tent sites offer backpackers plenty of possibilities for exploration. Step away from the paved roads and onto the trail and you’ll soon find plenty of quiet and solitude as well as moose, deer, eagles and loons.
Hikers will find plenty of opportunities for foot travel to a wide variety of scenic day hiking destinations, from the pristine wilderness of Baxter State Park to the pink granite mountains and ocean views of Acadia National Park; from the peaks and ponds of White Mountain National Forest to the half-million acres of state lands and parks.
