Noted economist Marcus Noland, an East-West Center Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Peterson Institute of International Economics, presents insights from his recent book "Witness to Transformation: Refugee Insights into North Korea," which provides a portrait of North Korea based on the experiences and views of the growing number of defectors who have fled the country.
Co-authored by Noland and Stephen Haggard, the book is based on unprecedented large-scale surveys of North Korean refugees in China and South Korea. It uncovers powerful social changes that are underway in North Korea including increasing inequality and corruption, as well as changing attitudes about social status, government and reunification with the South.
