At the Yodgorlik silk factory near Fergana, Uzbekistan, this is a demonstration of taking sun-dried silkworm cocoons, boiling them, then picking a strand off of them and feeding it into a spinning wheel. About 20 cocoons are needed to spin a single thread of silk.
This region is probably the first place outside of China to have silkworms - there is a story of a run-away Chinese princess who smuggled the worms in her hairdo.
