Devindra Dercie is 11 years old and lives in Mumbai with his family. Despite many hospital visits, he wasn’t diagnosed with drug-resistant TB until two years after his first symptoms. Like most young children, he had difficulty producing the sputum required for testing and had to be induced with a gastric lavage – essentially a pipe slipped down his throat into his stomach – to extract a sample. He recovered from the disease after 18 months of treatment.
