Iconic. Minimalist. Formal. All terms that describe the subway's most identifiable characteristic: its signs. Trevor MacDermid, a Brooklyn resident and web designer, is the founder of Underground Signs (underground-signs.com/). Founded two years ago, the company creates custom transit signs according to the MTA's standards, featuring those iconic white Helvetica letters against a black background. But it's more than just a sign: MacDermid shares his hypothesis on why New Yorkers are so emotionally attached to these slabs of metal.
