Matt Kurvin lives and surfs in Santa Cruz, Ca.
Matt was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida. His unique view of the ocean and its surroundings can be attributed to growing up on the Gulf Coast.
"I spent a lot of time on the beach and in the water watching 6 inch waves peel, wishing I was small enough to ride them. I was never able to describe to people the way I saw things, especially in the ocean. It wasn't until photography entered my world that I was finally able to do so."
It’s Matt’s passion for the surf and for life which inspire him to capture moments he can share with others in rich, living colors and textures.
Whether he’s photographing in his local beach town of Santa Cruz, California or traveling to spots far or near, his appreciation for the beauty in the world emanates through his work .
Quick note from Matt:
I've looked this through and thought about it long and hard. While trying to think of a way to change last years answers into something new and fresh - I still feel the same way this year as I did last year about all of these questions, and I honestly hope that never changes. That being said the past year has been a big year for me. I have benefitted tremendously by being a finalist in the 2011 FTLF Grant Contest, and look forward to a possibility of being selected as a finalist again, and maybe even winning.
Q. What is it about your photography that you strive to make special and unique?
A. A good photograph can bring you to a place of captivation and wonder.
My love for travel was sparked first from the pages of National Geographic as a kid, then Surfing and Surfer magazine, and The Surfers Journal.
Flipping through those pages brought me such excitement, that I couldn't wait to get on the next plane.
By using pulled back perspectives, unique angles, vibrant lighting, and interesting Subject Matter-
my goal with every photograph I take is to give that same feeling to those who view it.
Q. What makes you passionate about photography?
A. Life in general. So many moments go by that are not even noticed by most people. By taking that photograph, capturing that moment, it is frozen in time.
I love the fact that something that could otherwise go unnoticed, can be shared with people for generations.
Surfing and the ocean. I love it. Like I've never loved anything before. Once again I just want to try to share that feeling with others. That, most of all, is what inspires me to shoot.
Q. Who and/or what has influenced your photography and why?
A. Flame was a big one, Ansel Adams, Aaron Chang, Tom Servais, Jeff Divine, Nelly, Patrick Trefz, so many more.
Seeing the amazing imagery from these great photographers just made me say, "I want to do that".
Q. What dreams or aspirations do you have for your photography?
A. I just want to travel and shoot. I hope to one day be able to make a living doing so. Until then, I'll do it as much as I can in my spare time.
I would also love to eventually start a charitable foundation of my own one day. I donate prints now, but would like to do something on a larger scale. The world can always use more charity.
Q. If you were the recipient of the grant, how would you use the money to further your
photography career aspirations?
A. The money would go straight to the travel fund, to get me to the places where I need to be, and capture the places and people I've longed to see.
Q. Where do you see your career in 5 years?
A. I see myself doing this professionally full time, traveling the world, following the seasons. Being immersed in our culture.
It is what makes me the happiest, and I am determined to get there one way or another. :0)
