"Cause & Effect" is a project, carried out for Concern Worldwide which took the form of four short films driven by the poetry of Stephen James Smith with the intention of raising discussion on the topic.
“Cause and Effect was a challenging project to work on from the outset, presenting the topic of HIV and AIDs to a teenage audience is not something anyone takes lightly.” Director Simon Daniels and Producer Paul Tully spent a considerable amount of time working with groups of young adults and came to the understanding that a drama approach would engage the audience and allow them to buy in to the messages on their own terms.
This is the third time both Simon and Stephen have collaborated having previously made two poetry focused films. “I felt very comfortable when working with Stephan as I had gained that level of thrust which familiarity brings. His words really inspired me to write four unique pieces base around the core themes of Stigma, Prevention and testing, Access to treatment and Positive living.”
This is the fist time the concept of writing poetry and producing films based on that work has been used in a educational context. “Credit must be giving to Concern who allowed us the space to devise and create the four films as scene setters for a follow on discussion on HIV and AIDS.”
Colm O Foughlú provided the Art Direction and Visual Effects were carried out by Design for Life. Music for the four pieces were generously donated by Delorentos, David Geraghty (BellX1) and Raghu Dixit.
Simon commented “For me the best possible outcome from watching the films is that the audience opens its mind to the subject. Even if only enough to make themselves available to the follow on discussion. I felt that my job was to create a moment or move the viewer enough to consider the characters situations, relate to it, and following on from that asking questions and getting informed.”
