Fortepan is an on-line collection assembled by two collectors over a period of twenty years. The original goal was to publish on the website only high-definition downloadable and not copyrighted photos about the 20th century and to try to open up the world of archival photos for the lay public. After the website was launched, things started to evolve: on the one hand identifying the places in the photos has spontaneously started and on the other hand other collectors and heirs have contacted the founders to contribute their own photos. In this way, Fortepan has become a continuously expanding archive of currently about 10,000 photographs, equipped with a simple search engine. In addition to introducing the website, the presentation’s aim will be to share with some of the reactions from staff of public collections to learn, for instance, what museologists think about Fortepan. Also, it will cover some of the legal pitfalls as the way Fortepan operates is quite illegal indeed.
