John was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1965. He moved to Wheaton, Illinois and was playing electric bass by the time he was ten. By fifteen he was playing contra bass. John played gigs in Chicago while he was still in high school. At the time, Ray Brown and Paul Chambers were primary inspirations.
Over the years, John built a solid reputation as one of the best jazz bassists in Chicago and in 1986 he moved to New York City.
John’s first solo is an original hardbop blues piece titled “Smoke Signal.”
