UPDATE… Another World has moved to a new time and location! Veteran Artists is pleased to announce that Another World will take place at the deYoung Museum with sponsorship by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Originally planned as a one day arts celebration has morphed into two separate events. We are still planning a +Posse Ball this Spring*, but Another World has decided to showcase veteran arts, and themed performances at the much more culturally vibrant and relevant deYoung. In complete transparency, the American Legion has rejected a request to showcase veteran art and performance claiming Another World does not “represent” their “values”. While it is unfortunate and ironic that the Veterans Building will not host this opportunity for veterans, it is actually not surprising. The War Memorial Veterans Building was at one time home to many functional veterans services and an active community, as well as home to art centers such as the SFMOMA. Now the building is usually empty - save events at Herbst Theater (formerly Veterans Auditorium, where the UN Charter was signed in 1945). Much of this shift has to do with the decline of the American Legion whose commission is charged with utilizing the Veterans Building to offer the community services but by most measures has been failing for many years. Hopefully, when the renovation of the War Memorial Veterans Building is complete the American Legion works on aligning their “values” towards providing services and creative outlets for veterans. Instead of blocking events they believe “do not represent the American Legion”, maybe the American Legion should begin representing a larger picture of society or face increasing irrelevancy and eventually complete evaporation. AND instead we’ll be at the deYoung!!! So don’t worry, another world is [still] possible! In Spring 2013, Veteran Artists is teaming up with the Guardian to host “Another World” at the fabulous deYoung Museum!!! We will be occupying the deYoung with art, performance, film, food, and music. Later in the month join us for the +Posse Ball with performances as part of Bay Area Dance Week. There are so many amazing communities here that are coming together to make a new and better world, from Burners to bicyclists, activists and artists; the Bay Area is full of creative people who are making it happen. But Another World can’t happen without you! If you have something you would like to contribute or have any questions please contact sefunk@gmail.com. veteranartists.org/
