Pavilion of the Union of the Comoros
Artist: Paolo W Tamburella
Commissioner: Wahidat Hassani
Paolo Tamburella represents the Union of the Comoros with his project Djahasi. He juxtaposes issues of modernization versus tradition and addresses the new dynamics which people face as they adjust to rapid development.
The Union of the Comoros is an island group located between Madagascar and the African continent. Wooden boats, the Djahazi, traditionally used to transport goods and people, were in the recent past used only to unload container ships in the port of Moroni. After a new port had been built, the use of the wooden boats was forbidden and the Djahazi became obsolete. By restoring several of these boats for his project and shipping one in a cargo container to Venice, artist Paolo Tamburella addresses the economy of globalization and its impact on the lives of people who are inescapably involved.
