Casting for Recovery (CFR) was founded in 1996 on the principles that the natural world is a healing force and that cancer survivors deserve one weekend — free of charge and free of the stresses from medical treatment, home, or workplace — to experience something new and challenging while enjoying beautiful surroundings within an intimate, safe, and nurturing structure. The program and weekend retreats that are held annually around the United States, and here in Maine, provide an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a natural setting and learn the sport of fly fishing. Just as importantly, the retreats offer an opportunity to meet new friends, network, exchange information, and have fun.
Fly Fishing In Maine (FFIM) hosts a day every year on the first Saturday in June for "Alumni" of the CFR retreat weekend as a way to keep CFR participants involved in the sport of fly fishing, give them an extra opportunity to fish with knowledgable volunteer guides, and also a chance to reconnect with fellow breast cancer survivors. The one day fly fishing camp takes place in and around the Rangeley, Maine area. It is made possible by a dedicated group of volunteer fly fisherman and guides, the Rangeley Region Guides' & Sportsmen's Association that very generously donates the use of the association's clubhouse for the day, and a delicious dinner that the guides association puts on each year after a fun filled day of fly fishing. Everything for the day is 100% free for the participants and all made possible each year by volunteers and donations.
