In one of the most poignant moments of the sixth World Congress on Huntington's Disease, Dr. Jeff Carroll, an HD gene carrier and important HD researcher, and his wife Megan revealed how they conceived their HD-free twins, a boy and a girl, using PGD, preimplantation genetic diagnosis. The topic was particularly striking for Latin Americans. Genetic testing and genetic counseling are still a rarity, and it’s unclear as to what degree people know about PGD or have used it. In addition, abortion is illegal throughout most of the region, and, at least in the Brazilian case, legislation against genetic discrimination is lacking. Their testimony took place on September 17, 2013, at the congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr. Carroll is an assistant professor of neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Western Washington University.
