Arts & Business Scotland commissioned SMART Consultants, Aberdeen’s independent local art agency to manage a project to create bespoke Awards objects to be presented to the 2013 winners.
SMART Consultants invited artists Conan Abel, who works and lives in Aberdeen, and Kathryn Hinton, who was educated in Aberdeen, to put forward proposals for the creation of this year’s Awards objects. In the spirit of collaboration and to celebrate the essence of the Awards by working in partnership, Conan and Kathryn proposed that they jointly create Awards objects that reflect the best of each others practice. This year’s Awards objects follow the theme of ‘more than just an Award’ and we think all of this year’s recipients will agree that they are extremely desirable objects.
Conan’s work is largely based on the interplay of basic forms and he works mainly with UK-sourced wood, selected for its unique character and grain. Kathryn is a jeweller and silversmith who uses a unique digital silversmithing process which allows her to explore the idea of form to create innovative pieces of silverware.
The Arts & Business Awards 2013 Awards Objects are sponsored by Aberdeen Inspired.
