Beauty over Suffering confronts the absurdity of the anguish that is suffered as a result of society’s expectations of idealistic beauty and its imposition on women. The work focuses on the sacrifice of time and the physical discomfort endured on a daily basis. By methodically pulling her hair out, one by one, the artist subjects herself to this pain and suffering in a certain level of extremity, thus highlighting the absurdity of these deeply rooted cultural punishments imposed on women.
Beauty over Suffering 1 is the first of a 5-part series wherein the artist documents her pulling every single hair from one part of her body. Her face is presented with a slideshow of photo stills while the specific body part is a moving image. Both images are shown together with an audio accompaniment of the artist’s vocal suffering which punctuates the slideshow of still images.
