Powerful integrations: Upload directly from places like Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas, and watch from our app with Zeiss, GearVR, and Daydream headsets.
Find inspiration: Discover today’s best 360 filmmakers by following our brand-new curated channel.
Watch offline: Are you underground or up in the air? Download a 360 video on your phone to stream offline and enjoy at your command.
How it works
Upload away
Start uploading your video as normal, then simply tick the “This video was recorded in 360” box at the bottom of the page. Easy peasy!
After ticking the box, a dropdown with monoscopic or stereoscopic (top/bottom layout) will appear (if these terms are new, pop over to our 360 glossary). This part is all about your source file, not how your viewers will enjoy your video — we’ll optimize that based on their setup, headset sitch, etc.

If you’ve used a metadata injector tool, our robots will pick that up, auto-check the settings that apply, or lead you to our Help Center if we detect ways to make the viewing experience even better. No 360 metadata? No problemo. We’ll default to the most common 360 settings.
New embed options
Once your upload is complete, head to the Embed tab on your video settings. There, you’ll see two brand-new, pre-ticked boxes: the 360 badge and compass.
The 360 badge means that a sleek 360 icon will appear beside your video title everywhere it appears on vimeo.com — letting the world know at a glance that your video’s got something special going on. The 360 compass appears in-player, helping to orient your viewers and get them engaged. Or you can un-tick these boxes! It’s totally up to you. This is how it’ll look:

Advanced viewer settings
We’ve also got more controls in your Video file tab. Below the “Source type” section, tap “Advanced 360 settings,” and you’ll be whisked away to a stunning new page of video options. Here, you can customize viewing experiences for the web (and some places on mobile, too).
Choose the boundaries of your frame in field of view, and set your default orientation by selecting the exact coordinates of your pitch and yaw. This determines what “forward” means for your video, and it’s where the compass will reorient viewers if they tap on it.

How to watch
On mobile, simply tilt or drag your finger across the screen to look around. On desktop, you can click or use the arrow keys to explore. Extra cool new thing: you can also easily watch 360 videos offline from your phone. Simply tap the ellipse next a video on mobile, followed by “Make available for offline viewing.” Cruise over to your Library, tap “Offline,” and you’ll see your video ready for streaming — wi-fi or not.
What if you’ve got a headset? We think that’s awesome, and we want you to use it. Our Android and iOS apps sync up with most headsets: all you’ve got to do is tap the headset icon in the mobile player, or scan your headset’s QR code, and we’ll make sure the video renders properly for your gear.
Ready, set, 360
Phew! That’s a lot of info. We know 360 is complicated business, and that’s why this is truly only the beginning: we’re buckling down to offer you more 360 settings and tools, more 360 Video School lessons, and more stunning videos from our curated channel. Get a taste:
And that’s your cue: start uploading, and let us know what you’re loving or what you’d like to see more of. Got specific Qs? Visit our 360 Help Center, or add a comment below.

Thank you for incorporating this into your features! Does this feature also incorporate spatial audio?
Dana Cacciatore Staff
For now, we only support mono/stereo audio, but we plan on supporting spatial audio in the near future!
Vladyslav Karpenko
Thank you for answer Dana! I'm spatial sound producer so would like to know when vimeo will be able to play that.
David Lawrence Plus
+1 for spatial audio! And please, please bring it to the iOS app so so we can leave YouTube once and for all. :)
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@dlawrence @klarpen Noted! We're still in the midst of research for future development for spatial audio, so it would be great to know if there are any specific standards that you primarily use (or prefer).
David Lawrence Plus
Thanks for asking. We currently use the YouTube spatial audio spec which calls for 1st order B-format ambiX:
• First Order Ambisonic (FOA) audio channel layouts
• ACN channel ordering
• SN3D normalization
Facebook 360 allows other ambisonic formats but since 1st order B-format is common to both platforms, it's easiest to stay with that one. There are many tools to do format conversion so it's not that big a deal. Curious if other folks are using other formats.
We've been waiting over a year for YouTube to update the iOS app for ambisonic playback but it's still Android only. if Vimeo delivers first it would be a big win. Thanks again!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@dlawrence This is great feedback, and I'll be passing this information along to our product team. Thanks again!
David Lawrence Plus
Thanks Dana! You guys are the best! :)
Vladyslav Karpenko
@danac I currently using Facebook 360 in production. This workflow lets me create 1-st order ambisonic as well as specialised 8-channel Facebook version. Nowadays it's better to think about implementing 2-nd order ambisonic with lower order support.
I'm not using Dolby Atmos VR, but it would be good to have more platform that supports it.
Vladyslav Karpenko
@danac On the upload help page I find that "all source files containing spatial audio will be converted to 2 channel". So I tried to upload video with 1st order AmbiX...
It seems that Vimeo used straight downmix algorithm that not suitable for AmbiX format. For proper Ambisonic->Stereo conversion you should use special decoder.
Please, correct stereo downmixing process for ambisonic spatial sound or at least mention that under "spatial audio" in described sentence you name only 5.1 and similar format!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@klarpen I apologize for my delayed response. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee proper down-mixing for spatial audio formats. For best results, we recommend 2-channel Stereo audio.
Vladyslav Karpenko
Thanks for the answer @danac

cool.pool.media
great!
can you zoom in and out? up-to 'little planet' view?
the recently (3/1/2017) defunct gopro.vr site could do that and it was great...
if that is still not a feature: please, please incorporate it.
it would and will give me the incentive to finally become a PRO level vimeo member
but, first of all: thanks for jumping onto the 360 waggon
Dana Cacciatore Staff
While we don’t have zoom support, we do have a custom Field of View setting to control the scope that is displayed in the player. If you'd like to test it out, this setting is located within the “Advanced 360 settings” page (for 360 videos only), which you can get to from your Video file settings. Thank you for your support!
cool.pool.media
thanks, dana, for the fast reply...
could you forward the request for zooming to the right people? that would give vimeo such an advantage (and bring you money... without zoom i am still hesitant to upgrade, as clearly that is an almost necessary feature when viewing without VR goggles).
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Thank you for your suggestions! Let us know if you have any additional feedback after testing out the Field of View setting. This setting should help achieve the zoom you are looking for, without sacrificing quality. If it's not working out, we'd love to hear your suggestions on how to improve this setting.
FocusPulling (.com)
Something that I mention in my write-up about your new VR capability -- focuspulling.com/vimeovr -- is that it's unclear whether 3D left/right layouts will be compatible, since the only Stereoscopic option at the moment is 3D top/bottom.
Also, you mention the ability to upload videos with up to 8k resolution. Do you downscale for 4k playback, or do you support true 8k playback at this time?
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@focuspulling Currently, only top/bottom videos can be rendered in our player. In addition, we support 8K content for upload, but we do downscale to 4K for playback. This is definitely just the beginning, and we are interested in supporting other stereoscopic layouts and 8K playback in the future.
Craig Tooms PRO
I think this might answer your question.
Resolution: You can upload 360 video in up to 8K, and the Vimeo player supports 360 video playback in up to 4K.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Thanks @craigtooms! That's correct: upload is up to 8K, playback is up to 4K.

Are you sure it will go to 8K? I have uploaded several test videos at 8K and the picker only goes to 4K, are you downscaling for 4k playback, do you support true 8k playback at this time?
Craig Tooms PRO
OK, found the answer.
Resolution: You can upload 360 video in up to 8K, and the Vimeo player supports 360 video playback in up to 4K.

You mention watching Vimeo 360 content on GearVR -- how do I do that? Is there a vimeo app for GearVR?
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@ethanshaftel While we do not have content in the SamsungVR app, you can view 360 videos in the regular Vimeo App for Android. All 360 videos will be labeled with a 360 badge next to the title. Just tap on the headset icon in the player, scan the QR code on the GearVR, and snap your phone in to start viewing. I'd recommend checking out our 360 channel in the app to get started!
Simon Duflo PRO
Hi Dana, how do you scan the QR code on the Samsung Gear VR ? Where is it ? Everytime I launch a Vimeo 360 video from the Vimeo app ( I have a S7 phone) it launches the Oculus app and I can't watch the video. I see a QR code on Google Cardboard but not on Samsung S7.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@simonduflo Sorry for my delayed response. Unfortunately, we do not have any content or apps within the Oculus store. Are you able to exit the Oculus app within your headset?
The QR code should be on or within the Gear VR headset, and can be used to optimize the headset view in our app. However, scanning the QR code is not required to watch 360 videos in a headset.

It's about time! really happy for this new feature.
How does this differentiate from YouTube? what's the playback bitrate?
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@wiwu Happy to hear that! We've worked 'round the clock to ensure you get high-quality encodes for 360 — and the same goes for all videos on Vimeo. For 360 specifically, we've optimized our encoding process, so we can ensure your videos render in the best quality with a high bit rate. You also have the ability to enjoy all 360 videos offline, watch videos in 4K Ultra HD player, and join the world's best creative community — to name just a few things :)
Dani Tenenbaum PRO
Can you please be specific? what's the bitrate? is it playing 4k60fps? I'm a filmmaker and familiar with the tech details, don't worry :)
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@wiwu We do support 4k playback @ 60fps. If you press “D” in the player, you'll open our debug panel which can be used to check out playback details such as your current FPS, bit rate, quality, etc. I hope this helps!

Vimeo Folks - this is so awesome. Very happy to have 360 features here! :) I've been playing with the iOS app in Cardboard mode and there's a tweak to the player UI I recommend -- Currently, after pressing the Cardboard button, there's no way to pause or play a video. This is great news, can't wait to launch our 25 minute 3D 60fps film as a paid for experience. One thing, can we get a timeline bar to enable seeking on the mobile app when in Cardboard mode please! :) Also do you create a 30fps version when the source is 60fps? Seems to be multiple versions of the same resolution in the download options, not downloaded them all yet to check but are these for different frame rates? The file sizes are almost identical so this implies same bitrate for standard and high frame rate version so gonna be a loss of quality for the 60fps version negating the benefits of HFR. Just trying to figure out best source file to use. It's a bit wild west regards supporting different devices for VR with everything wanting a slight variation for optimal playback. Really happy to see you guys come to the 360 party though, great first release.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@nsccreative Thanks for the feedback! I completely agree that a timeline bar would be beneficial. We are continuing to work on and improve our headset experience, so I'll be sure to pass this suggestion along to our product team.
In regards to your question on FPS, we create a 30fps and 60fps playback file (for 60fps sources) for backward compatibility. This is to ensure playback across all browsers/devices— as some may not be able to handle playback at 60fps. There should be no significant loss in quality, however if you're seeing otherwise please let us know!
DayDream Artistry Plus
Thank you so much for adding this new feature. I'm just wondering how can I watch Vimeo VR videos on the Samsung Gear VR? You mentioned it in your Blogpost: "Powerful integrations: ..., and watch from our app with Zeiss, GearVR, and Daydream headsets."
I couldn't figure it out. Just found the Cardboard option on the mobile app.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Hi there! To use a Samsung Gear VR headset, you'll just need to tap the headset icon in the player and select "Switch" (when prompted to insert your phone). From there, just scan the QR code on the Gear VR, and our app will automatically render the video for your headset.
If you are already in cardboard mode, simply tap the gear icon in the right hand corner of the player and select "Switch Viewer". Let me know if you're having trouble!
Fabbula Magazine
To add precisions on Dana answers regarding GearVR users of the Vimeo app.
The solution proposed is as follows :
. Get a package disabler on the Google Plays (such as package disabler pro)
. Launch it and disable the GearVR service,
. In the player on the Vimeo mobile app, tap the headset icon and select "Switch" to use a different viewer. Scan the QR code that correspond to your phone/GearVR version (endspacevr.com/google-cardboard-for-gear-vr/)
. Insert the phone in the GearVR headset.
. Your GearVR controls should be functional and the accelerometers of the headset are used, which provide much better performance (and less nausea) than cardboard/phone combinations.
Now an app developed natively for Oculus/GearVR platform and adapted to VR user experience would be much neater. Commissioned videos and solid curation would be of great value too!
Manuel Campagnoli
What about placing interactive hotspots, like links to other videos? I would definitely use this feature for interactive tours or adventures.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@work2survive I apologize for the delay. Unfortunately, interactive hotspots are not currently supported on Vimeo. We agree that this feature would be useful and are currently researching this possibility.
In the meantime, you can add a link to another video within the outro (video ending) of your 360 video.

Is it possible to embed 360° videos from vimeo within native iOS / Android apps?
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Hi there! Sorry for my delayed response. It is possible to embed Vimeo 360 videos in iOS and Android apps using an iframe. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Adam Dargan Plus
When on mobile and using the "play offline" mode what level of video quality is being saved? I have a 4K stereo 360 video but I am not sure if I am playing back at 4K on the vimeo mobile app.
I do not see a quality setting control. Is this correct? And if so, what is the default playback quality for mobile?
I have to second David Lawrence's remark as well. No playback button once inside the "headset" option is a downfall. Looking forward to where Vimeo can take 360 video from here!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Thanks for your feedback! If you're seeing a lower quality file in offline mode, you'll need to enable "Allow HD Downloads" within your app settings. With this setting, the highest HD playback file (that your device allows) will be downloaded. For online playback, the player will switch between all of our encoded files, depending on the strength of your Internet connection (a technology called HLS). The quality menu is not supported on iOS devices for both online and offline playback.
That said, we have noticed some recent cases where the highest quality playback file has not been downloaded for 360 videos in offline mode. Our developers are hoping to implement a fix for this issue in our next app release. Stay tuned!
Adam Dargan Plus
Thank you for the quick and concise response!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Glad I could help!

Hi Dana! I agree wholeheartedly with all of David Lawrence's comments above. We have just completed a VR music video shoot using the GoPro Odyssey and would love an app for both Android and iOS that has great quality (like yours does!), spatial audio, local playback, and user-friendly UI. I agree with David's format suggestions for spatial audio as well. Thanks for being awesome!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
@ryanswiftjoyner Thanks for your feedback! Support for spatial audio has definitely been noted and is something we are working towards for the future.

One huge drawback to watching 360 vids in the Vimeo app is the inability to "tilt" within a 360 video with your finger. You can "pan" by dragging your finger across the screen, but tilting can only be performed via tilting the entire device (phone or tablet) only. WHY?? Youtube allows for both actions via finger dragging. Please add this feature to make the viewing experience easier!
Dana Cacciatore Staff
Hi there! This is actually a known bug, one that we're currently working on. We are hoping to release some changes in the future to correct the tilt function within the app. Thanks for flagging this!
EKAH
Just wanted to drop a note to say thank you for supporting 360 videos. There is a slight problem with swipe/dragging with fingers while viewing on the Vimeo app on iPad. The tilting works great when I move tilt the device, but it appears that I can only pan with my fingers from side-to-side, but not vertically, and the angle seems to be locked in the lateral direction. Is this a bug? Thank you.
Dana Cacciatore Staff
This is a known bug in the app that our dev team is hoping to resolve in the near future. We recommend tilting your device to explore vertically. Sorry for the trouble!
