Weekend Challenge: 20 Steps

Cameron Christopher
January 10, 2014 by Cameron Christopher Staff

Hey there, my proactive pedestrians,

This weekend, I challenge you to take an adventure. You don't need to climb cliffs or dive amongst the dolphins (although that would be rad); this adventure can be one you take every day. However, this time you're going to document it, stopping every 20 steps.

To begin, take a short video of the area you start your video adventure. Then, take 20 steps in one direction and stop and take another short video. Repeat this process after taking another 20 steps. After you've captured 20 little videos, every 20 steps, you'll edit them together to create a film.

Check out this example by TALLTREE, the winner of our last 20 Steps Challenge, which still holds up after a few years:

Here, the in-between moments were kept in (albeit, sped up), but feel free to use other transitions between clips! I'm a fan of the simple jump cut, myself, but things could get really interesting with whip pans or body wipes.

There is no limit to how long you capture a video after each set of 20 steps, but the whole video shouldn't go over 3 minutes. You could divide that equally, or give weight to some pauses and only a few seconds to others.

Once you've walked all 400 steps, edit the videos together chronologically and see what you come up with! You won't be going far, so the Challenge is to show an area in several different ways. Maybe you'd like to focus on perspective, or the angle of your shot. Maybe it's all about people, or varying shot type between macro and extra-wide.

+ Shoot 20 clips every 20 steps.
+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.
+ Add this at the end of your video's description: "Created for the Weekend Challenge:"
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, January 14th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you're already a Plus member, you'll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space!

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!

Ready for a challenge?

Let's see your year!

Quick question:

Does the cameraman have to be the one taking the steps or could the talent be the one walking? I have a neat little story I'd like to tell with this, but in order to do so the person doing the 400 steps has to be shot from several different angles.

Cameron Christopher Staff

The idea is to take 20 steps yourself, pause, and film, but as always: if you think you've got a valid way to push the boundaries, do so!

Rich Ryan

Another question: Does the clip at each 20th step need to be continuous or an you shoot a wide clip and then a zoomed clip at the same spot with a transition between them.

Cameron Christopher Staff

I'd stay just stop at each 20th step and do something — if that means mixing clips, go ahead!

Ashley Foo

Is it okay if I use a song that is uploaded by the creator and made available to download for free?

Cameron Christopher Staff

It's still best to check with the creator to make sure they don't mind you using it in a video — maybe see if they have a Creative Commons license listed!

2in Prods.

Can we go skating or cycling and do the length of the 20 steps? Or what we can do this way? Thanks

It's the first time that I have submitted to a Weekend Challenge and I am wondering in general, how long it takes for one's video to move out of the 'pending' status. I submitted it this morning but have not seen it posted. I'm not sure if it has simply not been gotten to, or if it was rejected. If it's not accepted, would I be notified as I would be interested in re-doing it, if it doesn't meet the standard. Much thanks.

Kai Jones-Biscette

Thanks Cameron - being a 'newbie', I wasn't quite sure how things worked.

Hi Cameron ! I'm Raphael from Paris and I just finished shooting, editing, and uploading my video tonight. Pretty challenging, indeed ! But I got a last technical question : when I go to the Weekend Challenge Group, I don't see anywhere where to post my video ? Can you tell where I'm supposed to do it ? Here is my video link, just in case ! Merci beaucoup !

Raphaël Pincas Plus

Wow, it was really simple. Sorry guys, I found it ! It just that it is 3AM here in Paris ... thanks god my video is submitted. Time to sleep. Good luck everyone !

You can, although it won't be considered for the challenge. You can always go back and challenge yourself using our old projects ;)

Great News. But where are the Winners of the previous challenges? Hardly any post is edited to show the winners?
