Weekend Challenge: 2013 Memory Bank

January 3, 2014 by Cameron Christopher Staff

Hey there, you sentimental sugarplums,

Although the calendar year may be a bit arbitrary, a fresh January does provide us with a specified time to think over the last 365 days. I find that the Memory Bank is a great way to fondly recall and document our annual trip around the sun.

Memory Banks are an excuse to take a look back through all the videos on your phone, the footage that didn't quite make it into your summer vacation video, and the scraps of video tucked away into folders within folders. That's the good stuff! I scoured through my hard drive last night to make an example, and I can tell you it's a thrilling experience:

One of the best parts about this Challenge, outside of coming away with your very own wrap up video, is the peek you get into someone else's life! Experiencing a sort of nostalgia for memories that aren't your own is neat. I feel that way when I watch last year's winning video by Matt Sears:

There are any number of ways to edit your Memory Bank video, but here are a few techniques to help get from clip to clip:

Visual Transitions - What works visually when moving from one clip to another? Think about lining the end of one shot up with the beginning of another. Swishblogs are a Vimeo Classic, using camera motion to ease transitions. Our very own Derek makes lots of these:

Audio Transitions - An easy way to smooth your video using sound is to let the audio from one track play through while changing the visuals. Using J-Cuts or L-cuts helps the video gain some continuity.

Rhythm - Think about the rhythm driving the clips, which can mean a few things. Alex's driving force was the limit of a second, but you could also pick music to carry the beat. As always, make sure you have the rights to the music you use! There's some really great stuff over at the Vimeo Music Store.

Themes - Maybe you don't feel like organizing things chronologically? Try grouping certain types of clips together. Crowd all the shots of crowds together in a 10-second whirlwind of concert footage, or put every sunset in a line. Get creative!

For a more detailed description of what a Memory Bank (or vidblog) is, check out our lesson Art of the Vidblog.

+ Recap your year with a Memory Bank video.
+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.
+ Add this at the end of your video's description: "Created for the Weekend Challenge:"
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Wednesday, January 8th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you're already a Plus member, you'll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space!

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!

Taunt Jarman

if we dont have much footage from last year does that make us exempt from the challenge ?

Cameron Christopher Staff

It doesn't need to be long! Use what you've got :) If you've got nothing, we'll have another Challenge next week ;)

Nandu Chitnis Plus

Sadly I got into videos around Sept 2013....I have only one video to meet these requirements (-:

Cameron Christopher Staff

Still love it :) Can't wait to see the video (although the process is just as good as the final piece).

Mike Shore Plus

I don't record sound much. do the clips have to have sound?

Cameron Christopher Staff

Sure don't! This was my first time using the sound from the clips in a montage, actually. I'm usually a music-only guy.

Mars Marson

i finished my video with footage from years before 2013 :c can i still submit it for this challenge?

David Leslie Plus

Hi Cameron - I have a question regarding using commercial music in a video - if I download, and pay for an mp3 using a service like Amazon, can I use it in a Weekend Challenge video? Or does this infringe the copyright? ie I was wondering if using in a Vimeo Weekend Challenge video is considered "private" or "commercial" use?

Øystein "Austen" Haugen Plus

It really depends. Often it´s not sufficient to only pay for the music. Vimeo is consider commercial.
You need to check whether your music is licensed for commercial or not.

All done :)
I added it to the "Vimeo Weekend Challenge" group but don't see it on the group page?

DoAn Forest Plus

My video is here:
Hope someone likes it, though I can't say I did anything particularly exciting in 2013, other than becoming the father of twin daughters :)
By the way, I clicked the box on my Vimeo page to add it to Weekend Challenge yesterday, but don't yet see my vid on the weekend challenge page.

Steven Prael

my video is missing, too. i guess they will add it to the group today.

Andrea Robustini

just read the rules, it will appear after a check from the staff..

DoAn Forest Plus

Thanks for the heads up. Looking again at the rules, I see what you're refering to in the last sentence of the instructions.

Steven Prael

@ Andrea Robustini: You are right, and I was aware of this, but I've uploaded my video already on Monday. No other videos were added to the group since then btw. Guess the Vimeo staff is busy :D

I have done my memories bank 2013 video
but i cant upload to vimeo because I have only 67 mb place and Im not plus member.
what should I do ?
thanks for your help for now.

Studio 73 Productions Plus

Well I got it uploaded at 11:58... however my video is still transcoding. Clicked add to group at 11:59... hope that counts!

Matt Sears

Same. I added it to the group and its ticked but its not showing in the group. Here's the link just in case :)

Øystein "Austen" Haugen Plus

Relax folks! If you read the rules, it says: "All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!"

Reel Focus PRO

Besides notifying the winner, how will the rest of us know who wins?

Carrie Hunter

I'm new to the video school. It's really awesome, but I was just curious if the usually announce the new weekend challenges on a certain day of the week or if it's on a regular schedule?
