Weekend Challenge: 5x5 - Complexity

September 27, 2013 by Cameron Christopher Staff

Hey there, Congenial Constituents,

This weekend, it’s time for another Vimeo Classic: the 5x5! I love the 5x5’s format, which is a 25-second video composed of five 5-second clips, using only natural sound. With those constraints, conscientious decisions and creativity really shine.

The theme this time around is “Complexity,” and it’s up to you to find the best way to illustrate this within the constraints. Take time to notice in the intricacies of things you may overlook day-to-day.

Here are few oldies, but goodies -- one from Scott Foley:

and one from Nicolai Amter:

This project is great for practicing new techniques, and focusing in on something that you might not spend time on otherwise. Think about how you could use different aspects of moviemaking, like transitions, unique shots, and natural sound. There’s plenty of beauty and lots to tell in only 25 seconds!

+ Create a video made up of 5 five-second clips!
+ Use only natural sound.
+ Tag your video with “5x5” and add this at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, October 1st, 2013***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a free Vimeo Plus account for one year, and one of our stunning new trophies! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year!
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space.

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

Can natural sound include the sound of people talking? Not a dialogue per se but audible sound you can understand unlike a muffle of a crowd.

Øystein "Austen" Haugen Plus

Does the video only last 25 seconds, or can it last longer, but the main clips need to be 5x5? Like the vid on top, 5x5: Water.

I have one second of black so I could fade out. Do I need to redo it without the fade?

Thank you Cam and the Vimeo team for the honorable mention of my last commision for the Vimeo Weekend Challenge: "introduce yourself". I am very happy!!!!

Emily Margaret

This looks fun! I'm going to try this for my first challenge.

Mr.Evil-studio

Scott Foley is very good video i like it
keep on & good luck bro

Angel Croitor

This is a great idea and also very easily executed. I think I might go ahead with a 5x5 challenge of an entire month of the year. I'll do October. Thank you for this!

mindfest

Nice, i like 5x5 a lot.

Connor Coleman

This sounds cool. Can the video be planned and scripted?

Are we allowed to change the video speed independent of the audio?

Cameron Christopher Staff

The only editing should be the cutting of the clips. Although you don't always need to edit to slow video down, things like the 120fps video on the new iPhone usually have slowed audio as well.

J.T. Harvey

Sorry, so are we allowed to change the speed of the clip to make it slow motion along with the audio?

Cameron Christopher Staff

J.T, I would steer clear of any editing of the clip. There are things, like the new iPhone, that actually work that way in camera, but the spirit of this project is to use raw footage.

Can we adjust the clip length, keeping the overall time the same. For example have a 2, 3, 5, 7 and an 8 second clip, rather than 5, 5 second clips. Or is that set in concrete? Thanks :)

I am assuming it is OK to record the sound with an external microphone and/or external recorder, right?

I know that the its says "dont worry if you video doesn't show up at first" but I posted my video to the group 8:30 this morning and it's still not there...the worry wart in me is starting to worry, oh boy.

Companhia de Canoagem (CdC) Plus

It takes around 24 hours or a bit more to appear, don´t worry. This kind of challenge brings zillions of videos, and they have to watch one by one...

Solpin Films

Joined before midnight, added video before midnight, then maybe removed the video after midnight, then quickly added again, yes it is a bit confusing how to add it. Had fun doing it, cool idea for a contest, hope it works... the video is here if that makes a difference vimeo.com/75931433 THANKS!
