Weekend Challenge: 5x5 - Me Right Now

Cameron Christopher

Hello out there, selfie society,

If you don’t already know, the 5x5 format is very simple: a 25-second video composed of five 5-second clips, using only natural sound. With those constraints, conscientious decisions and creativity really shine.

Tamara’s winning entry from the “Complexity” Challenge.

For this week’s 5x5, our theme is “Me Right Now” — with only 25 seconds, how will you decide to share the vibes of what’s going on in your life? Maybe you’ll share 5-second snippets of your day, like a micro-documentary, or you could go for something a little avant-garde, full of color and texture and subtlety. Anything goes, as long as it’s made of 5 clips, 5 seconds each, and has natural sound.

Karl’s winning entry from the “Simplicity” Challenge.

This project is great for practicing new techniques, and focusing in on something that you might not spend time on otherwise. Think about how you could use different aspects of moviemaking, like transitions, unique shots, and natural sound. There’s plenty of beauty and lots to tell in only 25 seconds!

+ Create a video made up of 5 five-second clips!
+ Use only natural sound.
+ Tag your video with “5x5” and add this at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge:
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space!

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

What do you mean "natural sound"? Like I can't record my voice and add it in post or something like that?

Alex Haralson

In general production terms: Nat sound is what is captured with the camera footage, either by the camera mic or by a recorder running in tandem with the camera. Voice-over is not natural sound. Anything created/recreated in post falls outside of nat sound.

Rui Pinto

Well, "natural sound" it's a little bit confusing. I guess when people think of natural they think of nature. One of the winning videos has a voice and for me that's a really (un)natural sound... But ok! More challenges will come ;)

Entertainers Plus!

I would think that they mean the natural sound of a video, and if you implant your voice, but not music blocking out the sound?

I did not get an email regarding this challenge .... I know last week there were duplicates as an issue but this week, no email at all.........

Ironically, constraints like this free you to be creative!

But how about 6 x 4 seconds? 5 seconds is a bit longish, and an even number of scenes allows for complete pairs of cause effect bounces.

Guys, why don't you create a group with all the vimeo weekend challenge winners?
It sure would be a lot of inspiration pilled up!
