Weekend Challenge: 5x5 - Simplicity

February 7, 2014 by Cameron Christopher Staff

Hey there, enigmatic editors,

It’s been 19 weeks since the last one, so we’re overdue for another 5x5 Challenge! If you don’t already know, the 5x5 format is very simple: a 25-second video composed of five 5-second clips, using only natural sound. With those constraints, conscientious decisions and creativity really shine.

Tamara’s winning entry from the “Complexity” Challenge.

To compliment the last 5x5 Challenge, this time around is “Simplicity,” and it’s up to you to find the best way to illustrate this within the constraints. I’m a big fan of a planned set of clips, thought up beforehand while ruminating on my life, but perhaps you’d like to collect clips all day and decide which make it into the 5x5 during the editing process.

Mario’s entry from the “Complexity” Challenge.

This project is great for practicing new techniques, and focusing in on something that you might not spend time on otherwise. Think about how you could use different aspects of moviemaking, like transitions, unique shots, and natural sound. There’s plenty of beauty and lots to tell in only 25 seconds!

+ Create a video made up of 5 five-second clips!
+ Use only natural sound.
+ Tag your video with “5x5” and add this at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge:
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, February 11th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year!
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space.

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

I'm a little unsure of what you mean by natural sound... Is it literally sound made by nature? Or does it need to be untampered sound, on board sound, or sound recorded specifically as the video is captured? What about voices or dialog captured naturally? And also, what is the meaning to life?

HomeSpot Media, Inc.

I think they mean no SFX or music put in at post, just sound recorded at the scene you are shooting, by either a shotgun mic or the built in mic.

Chris Tevebaugh Plus

Thanks that totally sounds along the lines of what they could mean. However If the meaning to life was a number it would have to be 3... or 69

Francisco Lobo

nope, it's 42. ask google
great topic, will try to submit.

Cameron Christopher Staff

1) Hey there, I did mean no sfx or music! Last time I said "in-camera" but someone brought up microphones, so I tried another term this time. Let me know if there's something better to describe what I mean!
2) 42.

To get it definitely right and accurate, do you mean that the sound has to be the one from the built-in camera or from a microphone directly connected to it? It's not possible, for example, to record sound on location from a separate recorder and use it on the video?

Chris Tevebaugh Plus

From what I understand as a non official source. Separate audio is fine but I believe it must be synchronised.

Cameron Christopher Staff

Yeah, I'd go with what Christopher says. The goal is to us what's present wherever you are -- if you'd like to record sound separately, that's fine if it's synced with the 5 seconds of video that should go with it!

Tim Ewins

Until he gets to 42nd Avenue?

Matthew McPhee

Can any of the five-second clips consist of more than one shot?

Companhia de Canoagem (CdC) Plus

Living and learning! 42 is the answer to it all..... Finally a good explanation. Thanks VIMEO!!! :) Maybe the next challenge can go on that direction... 42 clips about life???? Hummmm.....

Robert Malcolm

Nope - sound restrictions mean I can't do what I wanted to do with photographs mixed with video. Maybe next week. Good luck everyone.

Tim Ewins

Can I use timelapse 5 second clips, sort of not continuous, but sort of in that it's just a really slow frame rate?

Also can we enter more than one? This has really got me thinking....

Cameron Christopher Staff

Hey Tim, I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but I'd steer clear of time-lapse. The goal is to capture 5 seconds in the world 5 times -- a simple and simultaneously tough challenge!

Steven Prael

Hey Vimeo Staff, I always get two private messages with the same content when there's a new weekend-challenge. Is it my own fault? Can I change smth?

Tim Ewins

Am I right in thinking, once it's submitted, it'll show on hte page you're directed to when you click on 'accept this challenge'? And this is where all the entries are?

Sorry I'm a newbie...

Tim Ewins

I added one last night, but it doesn't seem to have gone up in the batch that just went up... There is a chance it wasn't acceptable?

Tim Ewins

Unless I didn't submit it properly?

Célia Bchir

I'm asking myself the same question...

Tim Ewins

Nice! I really enjoyed your 5x5, nice shadows and colouring!

Hans Kune

I also do not understand why my weekend challenge video is not shown. What did I do wrong?

Tim Ewins

Well I've missed the cut off point for my 5x5 being shown on the correct page (I am glad some of the others went up though!), but I still don't know why mine ( hasn't been accepted?

Could someone at Vimeo let me know so I can make sure I do something different for the next challenge?

Hey Cameron,
I've had the same problem as the guys above, uploaded a day ago and added, but haven't seen it pop up on the Weekend Challenge page. Is is a case of wait and see? Surely we made the deadline and our films will be added to the page in due course?
Thanks in advance

Tim Ewins

I'm up now, along with many others... I guess it just takes time, apologies for my impatience!

Nature relaxation HD

Uhh..Ohh. I'm missed the last Tuesday Feb,11. and put the video on Wednsday Feb 12.
Apologies for my impatience.

Arvind Caulagi

I think i submitted my video, way before the deadline. But it still doesn't seem to be up on the group. Any specific reason?
