Weekend Challenge: Bits & Pieces

Hello there, minuscule marvels,

Do you all know the fable about the blind men and the elephant? While the specific details and moral lessons change from version to version, the gist of the story is this:

A few blind men encounter an elephant. In an effort to determine what it is, they each reach out to feel the animal. The man near the elephant’s leg says the animal is like a tree; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a snake; the man who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope, and another finds the tusk and thinks the elephant is like a spear.

Each man is making a valid observation, but they have limited perspectives — one must come at something from all angles to get the full measure of it. This weekend’s Challenge is about looking at the bits and pieces of something to understand more about its entirety. Armed with patience, a detective’s eye, and a macro lens (or macro-sensibility), try to find something with layers of detail to expose.

Get experimental with your macro shots to use them to their fullest potential. What are the details that we might have missed otherwise? How can you reveal new ways of seeing something we may all be familiar with? For a bit of minuscule inspiration, check out Clemens Wirth’s exploration of the tiny world:

We’ve got some tips on using macro lenses in a previous lesson, but you don’t have to have a macro lens to participate. You could try a drop of water on your phone, or just focus on individual parts of a whole — more of a mental macro, you know?

+ Find something to focus in on, macro style.
+ Keep your video under 1 minute in length.
+ Add this at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge:
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, June 17th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space!

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

I actually have a macro lens I'm renting this weekend. The timing can't be a coincidence.

I don't have a macro len but I have something special to show this week!

What if we use a telephoto lens? Acceptable?
