Weekend Challenge: Magic Hour II

Cameron Christopher

Hello there, my golden guys and gals,

It’s Independence Day weekend in America, and we’re all feeling the summer vibes (although it’s raining in NY), and what says summer better than the sun? This weekend, your mission is to capture some cinematographic magic. How? By shooting footage during the “magic hour” (sometimes called the “golden hour”) — that elusive period of time where the world looks especially beautiful.

The magic hour happens twice every day -- the first and last hour of sunlight. Because the sun is near or just below the horizon, the natural light is soft, diffused, and full of warm tones. Midday, the sun is directly overhead, creating intense light and harsh shadows, but during the magic hour(s), you don’t have to worry too much about overexposing highlights or losing images to shadows. You can capture an entire scene in gorgeous detail by simply pressing the record button.

Check out our pal Charlie’s beautiful, simple bit of magic hour magic:

Like most things nowadays, you can enhance this natural experience with technological advances, like the Magic Hour app (which tells you when this golden slice of time happens in your location):

The Rules:

+ Make a video during the golden hour(s). Remember that only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.
+ Keep your video under 2 minutes.
+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.
+ Add this at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge:
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, July 8th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

The Prizes:

+ The winner will receive a badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space! All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

Oh no! It's supposed to rain here in Phoenix tonight :( Hope I can still get some good shots, maybe the sun will peek through the thunderstorms. This challenge should yield some beautiful shorts!

Erfahn Haghighi

Wish you had posted this last night so that we could film in the 'first hour' of sunlight.

Here in the UK, after 2 weeks of sun, there's nothing but cloud for the next few days. Darn! I so wanted to do this, especially as we have more than an hour of golden light at this time of year.

Oh no! Well send me what you create if you try this the next time the sun's out! I just went on a beautiful hike and was trying to channel your lovely videos while filming in the forest :)

This is an exciting challenge. I setup my camera sat so I could catch Sunday's sunrise. Lol didn't wake up. Today was a workday. I set my alarm for 5am pushed record and got back in bed and slept till the next alarm. I Can't wait to watch and edit what I captured.

John Pietroski

Proof read before pub listing! It sounds as though you're a bit lazy! That's all! I don't wanna offend ! That's NOT why we're here!

Audrey Wiggins

John, what you don't know is that I work an 8-hour job then come home and work 4 to 6 more hours for myself and 10 hours on Saturday's. There was only an 1.5 hours between alarms. I missed the sound challenge because I got caught in my work and could not edit the shots I took. I'm not offended.
