Weekend Challenge: One Day On Earth - Your City

Hello metropolitan media mavens,

Chances are you live in a city. Especially here -- 85% of Americans do. The mashup of cultures and backgrounds makes for an overlapping backdrop of endless stories and characters, and this weekend, we are teaming up with our friends at One Day on Earth to investigate these intricate urban environments.

We’ve got something to help you out on this single-day journey. Use one or more of these 10 questions about the future of cities as inspiration, interview prompts, or your guiding stars for visual investigation:

Why are you in your city?

What do you love about your city?
What is the best thing happening in your city today?
What are your city’s biggest challenges?
Who is your city not serving?
What is the worst thing that could happen to your city?
What are the solutions that your city needs to implement?
How are people changing the future of your city?
What do you hope for your city in the next 20 years?

This 24-hour filming campaign is open to everyone, but if you live in one of the US cities listed here, you have the added benefit of a local producer and partners on the ground. All the videos from all cities will be added to a geo-tagged archive, navigable via location, keyword, and profile.

To add your video to the One Day on Earth map, use the uploader on the project homepage — it will be available starting on 4/26, for 30 days, and will push the video to your Vimeo profile! Once it’s uploaded, make sure you add it to the Weekend Challenge Group as well — we’ll still have our usual winners, runners up, and prizes!

+ Film your city in whatever way you like, using the questions above as inspiration, on this Saturday, April 26th.
+ Upload your video at the Your Day Your City page.
+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.
+ Anything goes for your video’s title, but add this line at the end of your video’s description: “Created for the Weekend Challenge:
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by *****Tuesday, April 29th, 2014***** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you’ll get another year.
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space!

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don’t worry if your video doesn’t show up at first; we’ll get to it!

One Day on Earth PRO

Hey Russ, the archive remains open for uploads for 30 days, but it has to be shot on Saturday. What city are you representing?

I think Russ refers to lengt. Am I right??

Russ Anthony 411 Plus

Ultimateroger is correct. I am asking about length. Are videos to be less than 3 minutes or some other length. Video will be about Nashville, Tennessee.

One Day on Earth PRO

There are no length restrictions, sculpt it as you'd like! We recommend 2-5 minutes though. For the longer format edit we are taking on, we'll be coming back to talk about the raw footage, so definitely back it up!

you are a cheater! read this "Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered."

your video was uploaded 2 weeks ago!

Hey Gab - It's a great video nonetheless! We'll be excited to bring the Your Day. Your City. Your Future to Beirut, officially! 'Kanno' - did you get a chance to film on the 26th? Thanks Guys!

A. L. Crego

Yes it is! I couldn't film yesterday, but I am really interested on other's films. And when I saw this one made weeks ago, I seems to me unjustice.

One Day on Earth PRO

I'm sure an honest mistake... but you have to admit - it's pretty rad! Gab/Kanno - we'll link up for the next collaboration. and we will share the awesome results of this one as they roll in. Cheers guys and have a great week!

Shiply PRO

Even if the video is not valid for this challenge it's still amazing by the way. Great work Gab!

It's fine for the project though. This project is simply connected to a Weekend Challenge, but I would think it's OK to submit something for the project even if it doesn't follow the rules of the challenge.

OR, you could reedit the video to match the assignment--bending rather than breaking the rules.

John Peter Thiel

I was thinking this would be the first video I made using footage I already shot. But then I saw the trailer and thought it's not really my topic. The trailer highlights problems, obstacles. My shorts are typically comforting and my only suggestions about improving New York City would simply be improvements.

I"m going to bow out of this one.
