Weekend Challenge: Show Us Your People!

Meghan Oretsky
May 23, 2014 by Meghan Oretsky Staff

Hello my future favorite filmmakers,

I don't know about you guys, but at the end of the week I'm psyched to spend quality time with my favorite humans. Are you planning on doing the same, perhaps with a recording device in hand? Then read on!

Everybody’s got a crew. Whether you straight-up share DNA, or strangers mistake you for family, there are people who - for better or worse - somehow make you feel like you are an essential part of something bigger than yourself.

This weekend’s challenge is about portraying the culture you share with your family, group of friends, or community. Try to capture those stories, quirks and intimate moments that happen only in the space of your relationships.

In high school, I had a friend whose family shouted “Shakespeare!” before cutting into a birthday cake. I still don’t know the story behind that ritual, but I think it’d be way cool to learn more about it from a short movie.

Here’s one thing to keep in mind, though: Inside jokes are only funny for the people in them. When you’re filming, just make sure it’s interesting for outsiders!

For inspiration, I suggest checking out Gnarly Bay’s exceptional film about their friend Colin’s epic, insane bachelor party. The filmmakers did a great job making us laugh just by capturing each hilarious personality, then making us weep with an ending that reminds us of the people in our lives whose presence is also a “sweet honor!!” I love how Colin's pals took this traditional event and turned it on its head.

Chris Zabriskie’s voice-over narration of his family’s trip to Disneyland in 1990 is a great example of how to make a personal memory compelling. Every year, lots of families surprise their kids with a trip to Disneyland and film it, but what made his video unique is in the details: the dated look of an American theme park in 1990, robot Abraham Lincoln, and why it meant so much to the Zabriskie family 22 years later.

PS: Clips from home movies are totally accepted and encouraged!

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask away in the comments below.

I hope you guys have an excellent weekend with your buds! I can't wait to see your entries next week. Have fun!

Eric Buist Plus

So, I have gotten an email about this every 20 minutes. You should probably fix your system...

Meghan Oretsky Staff

Oh no! Apologies, Eric and Ryan. I've contacted someone on our support team. Thank you for alerting us to this issue!

Mohamed Nazmi

I've received the barrage of e-mails too. That was something to wake up to.

Thrillpill Films PRO

I got eight messages about this challenge.
Which is seriously up from the usual 3 I get ever weekend.

Justin Waldman Plus

With all these notifications, you clearly WANT me to take up this Challenge

Usually with only 8 people entering these Challenges I think I will give it a miss!

Meghan Oretsky Staff

We don't share how many submissions we receive, Mr. Deadbug, so I'm not sure where you found that number : / However, all the more reason to submit! You've got a greater chance of winning :)

Neil Asher Films Plus

Hopefully, this film qualifies for the challenge as I think it suits the challenge brief. However, it was originally uploaded it on 20th May, but I re-cut it yesterday (25th) to comply with the new copyright match policy.

Hi Neil, thanks for sending this video along! Unfortunately, only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

Ben Tobin Plus

I've only done this once before but not sure if I submitted correctly. Last time there was a notification of some sort and I believe I just checked off this group on the video's add to list. Is there something else I need to do?

Sandy Brown Jensen Plus

I love this challenge, and I gathered media all weekend and wrote a script. I'm ready to put it together, but the pesky problem of having to go to work has me too tired Wednesday night to meet the deadline. Sigh. Maybe when I retire, I'll have time...

I look forward to seeing the contestants!

Entertainers Plus!

I know what you mean, Sandy, as 2 wks ago I was really inspired and wanted to make the music video, but I was about to make a long trip and did not have time. I hope we have more opportunities like that one! I even identified with the "Sound" video last week, went through the motions of filming the walk down the hallway of the hotel I was in because I could hear people inside their rooms, envisioned what I would do from there, and darn, the week was up, I had to take the trip back home and {sigh} I missed that one, too :-( Thank you Vimeo Weekenders for the opportunities!! Can't wait to try out a new one!

John Peter Thiel

I had technical difficulties which prevented me from getting my video in, on time. Does it still count for this weekend challenge?
