Weekend Project: One Minute of Reflection

Katie Armstrong
November 15, 2012 by Katie Armstrong Alum

It's easy to get caught up in the brain-frying, bank-breaking hustle and bustle of the impending holiday season. What better time to stop and reflect on something understated, overlooked, yet absolutely indispensable in your life? If you've got a minute to spare, that's plenty of time to participate in in this classic Vimeo Project.

The rules are simple:

  • Find something in your surroundings that you're grateful for -- something that deserves thanks.
    • Since we're focusing on the little things in life, we'd like you to shoot on a macro scale. For a more in depth explanation of all things macro, check out this lesson from Vimeo Video School. Get creative, get close, get as abstract as your heart desires!
    • Once you've found and framed your subject, shoot for exactly one minute.
    • There can be no camera movements (panning, tilting, etc.) or editing, and you must make use of only the original sound.
    • Your video must be added to the Weekend Project Group by Monday, November 19th at 11:59 PM EST

Not convinced that a project so simple can render stunning results? Check out Erich Meyer's "Fireworks on the Water" video from the official One Minute Project Group:

The winner of this Weekend Project will receive a free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you’re already a Plus member, you can gift the Plus account to whomever you choose and we’ll give you an extra 5GB of weekly upload space for your account. The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space, Plus account or not. Please note: The Vimeo Staff must review your submissions before they appear in the Group, so if you don't see your video in there right away, don't fret!

Good luck, friends! I can't wait to see all your beautiful little moments.

We were blown away by the caliber of all 142 entries for this project! You guys made it extremely tough to pick our winners, but after much deliberation, we're so pleased to congratulate the following:

  • Our winner, Simon Gilberg with "Piano Hammers." These humble objects were not only beautifully captured, but such a clever choice.

  • Our runner up, John Rey, who dared to play with fire for his video, "Light, Heat & Life"

  • And our honorable mention, ESA with "Winter Now." We loved not only the frosty video, but the warm description that went with it. Small kindnesses are important!

So it has to be one continuous shot?

Chris Luong

Yes, I think that's what they mean by no editing. (:

Blake Spurgeon

If this was posted today, how do we submit our videos on Monday, November 12?

Ian Durkin Staff

Whoops! Our mistake. Submissions are due on Monday, November 19th at 11:59 PM

If you have one? ;-)

Paul 'Robson' Robertson

Does color grading count as editing? Or are we talking raw untouched footage out of the camera...

Krystian Gwizdak

Hmm... Sounds extremaly boring... But maybe I'll give it a shot. I have a set of macro tubes somewhere...

Cameron Christopher Staff

It's only boring if you let it be, Krystian! Take some time to appreciate something little, and you'll come out of it pleasantly surprised.

Sacha Barraud PRO

Wow! I like the idea, worth trying! but this is a bit of a short notice!!!S.

Billy Brown

Does no editing mean no macro timelapse then?

BlueSky Intertainment PRO

Mmmm sounds interesting, well let me get my macro lense attached, and find something to shoot real close up...good luck everyone :o)

Greg Nuspel Plus

I guess slow motion is out as well even if it comes from the camera, since it says "shoot for exactly one minute."

Gurbir Nakhwal

Is it ok to record sound separately using a sound recorder and mic? Or does it have to go directly into the camera?

It seems interesting !! wish I could try one..... !!

Jordi Castan

How can I add my video to the week end project ?

Billy Brown

Companhia de Canoagem (CdC) Plus

They will have a look at it before publishing. Just to check if it follows the rules. Takes a few hours, one day... Don´t worry.

Seth Wharton Plus

What about titles and fades? Are they OK? Or just one minute, unedited in any way?

Great project! :) It gives me a full ideas that I would've never thought before!! My house is now like a little laboratory ! A shame though that we cannot edit.

"there can be no camera movements (panning, tilting, etc.) or editing, and you must make use of only the original sound." this is worse than DOGME 95! who thought of this?haha

Jens Bäckvall Plus

Nice. I've uploaded. But I got a bit carried away, so I've actually made 4 different ones, although three of them are kind of linked. But sorry for spamming :-)

Renny Lewis Plus
