Over the past couple months Patrick and I have been rewriting the Vimeo player from the ground up. Today we have released the new player to everyone! We have built a framework that will allow us to add many new features and customization options in the near future. It's going to be pretty awesome.

Here's a small highlight of our changes and enhancements:

There are a lot of design tweaks and all the outro screens have been completely redesigned. Thanks Jack and Sox!

We wrote the player in AS3. Simply put, everything should work inherently better and faster. Videos will play a little better and switching to fullscreen is less jarring.

HD embeds have a HD link back to the video on Vimeo.

We've made a lot of improvements to fading the timeline in and out. For example if you move your mouse outside the video, the timeline will hide itself automatically.

We've created a smarter video buffering system. This is still being tested and would love any feedback

Total runtime is now displayed when a video initially loads.

This is only the first installment to many new additions to the player. Once we launch Pro accounts, you'll have more than a handful of customization options.

Enjoy and please let us know if you have any problems.

I am not able to get my embedvideos to play...
I'm afraid I'm going to have to use Utube this time.
Please advise.

Hey Beth, I'll send you a private message and see if we can figure out what's wrong.

I love how she puts "please advise"

Like people give a shit that she wasn't able to embed vids.

Besides that I love the way it looks.

i think the vimeo people actually do "give a shit".
notice how staff replied immediately...

Aneste: People, especially staff, actually do care, because unlike YouTube and other video sites, the staff like to fix problems immediately and make Vimeo behave exactly how it should.

I like how the timeline instantly goes away before it would some times block font/visuals when it stayed up for a while.

Good stuff

and the new big huge "vimeo" logo now on the timeline. UGH

That's not my favorite thing, either. I do understand why it is there, but maybe if it was a dark grey, so it stood out from the black timeline but wasn't so completely different, it wouldn't be so bad.

I do feel it's excessive having it in the timeline and in the end of the video. Is vimeo so desperate for views that they need to resort to this? Or is vimeo getting greedy? Only they can know for sure.

Will Pro accounts be able to stream HD without linking back to Vimeo's site (sure hope so)?

Yea soon I hope you guys hide the vimeo that flashes in the very beginning before a video loads this way our videos will be transparent.

I wish when the player was buffering, it would say 'buffering'. Now it only shows a blinking progress bar. My users often give up and close the browser window thinking it is just not working

Hi,
I am a Vimeo user for my personal use. However, my company aeroplan.com is uploading videos on their website using Youtube player. We do no see the traditionnal players icons (link to youtube.com, replay buttons at the end of the clip). I thought it was an independant player but no, it is youtube.

No need to mention that the output quality is pretty bad, youtube being known for their bad compression.

I told them that everybody is now using Vimeo since the quality once uploaded is great.

Can you offer to my company a player that seem to be proprietray but indeed it is using Vimeo at a reasonable price?

Thanks,
anne-marie.bergeron@aeroplan.com

I have several high end PC's (3 8 cores, etc) the slowest with 16 GB of RAM and the vimeo player is choppy on all of them (PC)

Safari runs rather well -- much better. In fact, incredibly better. My understanding is that Flash is better optimized for Windows - so what gives? You can look at my test footage if you want.... no matter what it doesn't play smooth.

I actually have some connections at Adobe if you need some help connecting with them - just let me know. Would be great to see better / smoother playback on the pc

Password is not working for me either on embedded videos, it says Invalid password (I´m sure i´m typing the correct password because it works perfectly in the vimeo url for my private video). I embedded using old embed cold and it works fine, but the new universal code just keeps telling me invalid password. Please help! thx!

the vimeo's videos stopped running inside facebook, now opens another tab in the browser, in full screen. this change was awful, a disaster. who is on facebook don't want go out to see videos, they want see them on the timeline. you really managed to screw things up, I will migrate my videos to youtube.

The scaling on the new player looks terrible. I have 720p source files which look great when in full screen or at native resolution in the new player. But when viewed within the vimeo website, the scaling algorithm used is terrible. I can't read the text and my demos look horrible.
