On November 1, 2007, Canamedia Productions Ltd and Canamedia Film Productions Inc merged to become CANAMEDIA Inc. Both companies were owned and controlled by the same management.
Canamedia Productions Ltd was founded in 1978 by producer/director Les Harris and executive producer Jane Harris. It is one of the longest established distribution and production companies in Canada. Canamedia Film Productions Inc was incorporated in 1997.
Canamedia was the first Canadian company to pre-sell a movie of the week to a US network (CBS) in prime time (Escape From Iran: The Canadian Caper in 1981) and has co-produced with many of the Canadian, US and UK networks.
Productions over the years have ranged from TV movies and one hour drama series, to half hour children's drama series and numerous documentaries. Projects currently in development by Canamedia or it's producer clients range from documentaries to kids, travel and lifestyle series and a TV Movie.
Co-productions or co-ventures have been completed with BBC TV and Channel 4 in the UK, Canal+ in France, CBS and PBS in the USA, and Taurus Film in Germany. In Canada the company has co-produced with all the major networks. Details of previous productions and shows in development can be found in the catalogues on this website.
Canamedia's distribution division is a major syndicator across Canada and the US and is a leader in the new specialty channel and digital universe. In Europe, Asia and the far east, Canamedia's catalogue of programs also gets wide exposure. Approximately 99% of Canamedia's catalogue is programming by independent Canadian producers.
Apart from its high quality documentary catalogue, Canamedia has become one of the world's leading distributors of lifestyle programming and adventure/outdoor shows. Other categories licensed include drama series, TV movies, musicals, jazz, and children's.
Internationally the company regularly attends MIPTV, MIPCOM, NATPE, and The Banff Television Festival. Apart from visiting the markets, sales executives make visits to broadcasters in both North America and Europe and are often involved in pre-selling shows as well. Producers are kept informed of their shows' progress and market trends as well as getting detailed written sales reports at least twice a year.
The company also has editing facilities and over the years co-founded a number of related companies including the YTV children's cable network.
Currently Canamedia Inc is the exclusive supplier in Canada of the ITN Source news archive library and the music library Pump Audio. It also supplies all the programing to the the closed circuit Bar TV channel in Toronto.
