1. CIRCA Projects present a screening and discussion event at BALTIC, exploring the ideas behind the exhibition, Approximation in the digital age to a humanity condemned to disappear by artist Mario Pfeifer.

The artist will discuss the problematic nature of anthropological filmmaking practice with curator Amira Gad (Serpentine Galleries, London); considering how this practice might adapt to different cultural, social and political scenarios. The event will feature two rarely seen films, chosen by Mario Pfeifer, An Image by Harun Farocki (1983) Agarando Pueblo by Luis Ospina & Carlos Mayolo (1977).

Pfeifer will discuss his new project, presented by CIRCA Projects, which he developed while living on Navarino Island, Chile. This project presents different realities of life in an area that indigenous people, settlers, and military personnel all call home. He presents a new perspective on one of the planet’s most ancient and remote indigenous cultures: whose native practices are now not continued. Pfeifer will discuss his own filmmaking methods and those he is influenced by.

Mario Pfeifer is an artist living and working in Berlin and New York. His work explores representational structures and conventions in the medium of film, in locations ranging from Mumbai to California to the Atacama dessert and Western Sahara. He conceives each project out of a specific cultural situation, researches social-political backgrounds and weaves cross-cultural art historical, filmic and political references into a richly layered practice, ranging from film and video installations to photographs and text installations.

Amira Gad is currently Exhibitions Curator at the Serpentine Galleries in London. Prior to this, Gad was Managing Curator/Publications at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. In 2013 she contributed a new text for Mario Pfeifer’s book ‘A Formal Film in Nine Episodes, Prologue and Epilogue – A Critical Reader’, published by Spector Books.

Mario Pfeifer’s ‘Approximation in the digital age to a humanity condemned to disappear’ is presented by CIRCA Projects October 16 – November 21 2015. The John Joyce building, Saltmeadows Road, Gateshead.
