A rock slide completely blocking SR 971, also known as South Lakeshore Road, occurred on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at approximately 5:30 p.m. along the South Shore of Lake Chelan about five miles west of Chelan. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reports that the road is closed between between milepost 9 and milepost 11. The slide occurred at around milepost 10.5.
Robert Sweigard of WSDOT stated in a press release that they anticipate a several day closure at minimum and that the situation will be re-evaluated in the morning.
Washington State Patrol troopers estimate that the slide is about 30 ft. deep. WSDOT will re-evaluate the slide today, but a spokesperson commented late Wednesday evening that they anticipate a several day closure of SR 971. Residents living up-lake and past the slide area closure between milepost 9 and 11 will have to detour around the area using Navarre Coulee Road.
