After being nominated as the world’s most liveable city for the fourth year in a row, I thought what better subject to showcase in my new time-lapse short film than Melbourne itself.
For the past five months I have been exploring the city once a week (when the weather was co-operating) to capture all these scenes. I wanted to present the parts of Melbourne that stood out to me and bring life to the images using time-lapse photography.
Well over 20,000 images were shot. Many hours walking through-out the city carrying heavy camera equipment, and countless hours in editing time (thrashing my 13inch Macbook pro to its limits), were spent just to make this project come together. I have never worked so hard on a project & I’m extremely proud of what I have made. I really do hope you enjoy the video.
A special shout-out goes to Matt from Photosentinel for the support and the use of an Emotimo TB3.
Also thanks to Eureka Skydeck for the passes to shoot some shots above Melbourne! The view from up there was truly amazing!
Late in winter 2013, we had the opportunity to get away from the office and long term-time lapse for a day, Matt from our team went off on an impromptu exploration of Melbourne over 24 hours to see what how he could represent it in time lapse. A basic shoot with minimal production gear, he had a pocket full of batteries, limited card space, and his two feet for transportation.
It's not every day that you get to visit most of the Melborune key landmarks of Flinders Street, Albert Park, Eureka Tower and then off to the Dandenong Ranges to jump in a hot air balloon and see it from a completely different perspective.

A Timelapse/ Hyperlapse Short Film of Melbourne Australia
When I created this video the first time a year ago, I was working off of my laptop. Now that I have updated equipment and am lucky enough to be able to work on 4k+ hardware, I thought I would remaster this video. I actually completely re-made it, with a different song and different clips. I even posted it, but before promoting it I went back and watched my original and liked it more lol. Something about the M83 song, "My Tears Are Becoming a Sea". So I went back and literally recreated the whole video in updated resolution. There are some changes to the intro, outro, and some clip differences. Hope you guys enjoy!
I recently returned home from spending 2014 in beautiful Melbourne Australia. While studying photography at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology I was given a unique opportunity to combine what I was learning there with my film background in the States. This is the product of my opportunity. This was certainly a learning experience for me and if I could go back I may do some things differently. Having said that, I am proud of this project and hope you enjoy it! I welcome constructive criticism. If you have any thoughts or questions feel free to ask!
This project was not completed without a fair share of adversity. I had cops called on me, was rained off location. I even had a computer crash and lost many shoots. Thankfully I had most footage on an external drive.
This short film was taken from:
