The Paradigm Shift Project

  1. This documentary concerns the social, environmental, and economic impacts of palm oil production in Indonesia, including the loss of over 2.8 million hectares of primary rainforest each year. That's
    six football fields every minute!

A common ingredient in thousands of products, from anti-freeze to shampoo to potato chips, palm oil
comprises an integral part of Indonesia's economy. However, its impacts on local communities are little
known, and include conflicts over human rights, land rights, and environmental protection.

Informed by the work of local non-profit organizations, this film has been created to educate consumers around the world, to help them realize the effects of palm oil consumption, as well as how we can all be
part of a more sustainable solution.

  4. A new method of planting rice in Bali is protecting indigenous seed stocks, traditions and livelihoods, thanks to a local organization's commitment to sharing knowledge and skills in sustainable permaculture practices. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI), developed originally in Madagascar, is a method of cultivating rice that can double the yield of conventional rice harvests, while requiring 90% less seed, 80% less water, and no chemical inputs. The impacts of this new method are far-reaching, offering more income for farmers and their families, as well as a healthier environment for future generations. The Paradigm Shift Project has documented these impacts and the needs of the local community for more training workshops on the SRI method, led by local Balinese organization Tri Hita Karana Bali.

  5. Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most developed nations, and yet, is home to some of the most marginalized children in the world, whose rights are far from recognized or upheld. These children are stateless, refugees, and/or street kids.

It has been estimated that there may be as many as half a million children between the ages of 6 and 18 who roam Malaysia's streets every night. And the UNHCR has counted 18,600 refugee children. In the red light district of Chow Kit and other neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur, many of these kids are at risk of sexual abuse, imprisonment and deportation, and human trafficking.

A small percentage of the stateless are illegal immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines, whose families have fled to Malaysia in search of better economic opportunities, but over 90% of these children are Malaysians without papers: children born out of wedlock are still not recognized as citizens. Others are refugees from Myanmar’s ongoing genocide and conflict, not recognized as asylum-seekers by the Malaysian government. Without adequate legal protection, these youth are all too often completely neglected by government institutions and programs.

These youth face a host of social issues including violence, drug abuse, poverty, and sexual abuse, and are continually failed by a lack of education, social support, and a justice system that often even perpetuates these cycles of abuse. Most live in fear everyday for their security.

In this film, The Paradigm Shift Project documents these issues, and the solutions local NGOs are implementing to address these issues, as well as how we can all help give these children the rights they are entitled to.

Welcome to the channel for The Paradigm Shift Project! Our goal with these projects is to highlight various social and environmental issues in the global south, to assess the needs of the local community, and to show how there are great organizations already implementing programmes to address these issues and needs. We hope to encourage a paradigm shift in the way people think about development, and also in how people give to support sustainable change. By investing directly in local organizations around the world, our support will go a long way to build networks and trust between social, cultural, political, economic and geographic hemispheres. The Paradigm Shift Project connects you to these issues, communities and organizations globally.

The Paradigm Shift Project (PSP) aims to advance education on important issues relating to poverty, ecology, health and community development in developing countries. Through the production of documentary films and educational materials that are informed by local communities and those who work to help them, PSP works to demystify international development for the general public through education initiatives, and teach our youth how each individual can help to create positive change in our society.
