Water is essential to any programme to eradicate poverty and improve sanitary conditions. In this respect, it forms the basis of sustainable development.
After the deadly devastation of Typhoons Murakot, Ketsana and Parma in the Pacific this year, it’s now the turn of the Caribbean to gear up to face the threat of possible disaster as Hurricane Ida threatens the region. This story shows remarkable disaster preparedness projects in two of the most vulnerable countries – Haiti and neighbouring Dominican Republic, on the island of Hispaniola. Powerful footage begins and ends with a dramatic, full-scale emergency evacuation exercise; it also shows aid workers communicating the messages of disaster preparedness through street art, theatre, song, and impromptu leaflet distributions ; and tragic personal stories from recent disasters : a man who lost his wife and children in a mudslide ; a woman whose home was swept away in a flash flood ; and a family who have to move out of their home every year when their neighbourhood is flooded.
