Motion Theory puts a sci-fi twist on the experience of playing EA Sports NBA Live '06 with a spot that features NBA superstars Tracy McGrady and Dwayne Wade.
Wieden+Kennedy and EA Sports approached Motion Theory to capture the experience of playing NBA Live '06 with an offbeat, sci-fi concept. "Mech Warriors‚" features Tracy McGrady and Dwayne Wade in a venue that initially appears to be a practice gym, but turns out to be a high-tech testing facility for robots. The twist hits when McGrady finishes playing, and walks over to a line-up of NBA greats. He stops in front of Wade, then suddenly opens up mechanically, revealing a regular guy sitting at the controls of an advanced robot. Motion Theory mixed live-action, CG, and practical effects to create the spot's robotic twists, with all the CG handled in-house. To add to the spot's realism, we teamed with the robot specialists at Stan Winston Studios, who created incredible life-sized versions of the robots for close-ups.
"We’re all amazed by Ken Block’s latest Gymkhana video, but there is an undercurrent of those that feel the real drifting scene started underground and that is where the real stars are. This video by Format67 is a return to the “running from the cops” days for most of us, when we would find an empty parking lot, have our fun and quickly dart away before getting in trouble."
