Gregs Educational

  1. Astronomy education today for students is primarily passive. High school and college kids get to listen to lectures, see some documentaries and videos, and perhaps do a virtual lab or two on the internet. If they are very lucky and attend a school at a location that has an observatory, they may be able to meet occasionally at night to see the stars. However, very few schools offer observational viewing time.

How can Astronomy be best taught in the typical classroom, with kids stuck in their seats? What we needed to do as educators was to get these kids out of their seats and up into space, preferably piloting their own hyperdrive spacecraft to hundreds of exciting destinations, while interactively teaching them Astronomy as they traveled.

Finding that teaching vehicle has been very difficult. Most Astronomy software available today shows students views from the perspective of Earth. They do not allow them to fly through space and do not give them separate accompanying Astronomy lessons. They are also expensive ... until now!

In 2005, I discovered Celestia. Celestia is a FREE open source Astronomy simulation program originally developed by a gifted graphics designer in 2003 to give people the ability to actually fly into space in their own spacecraft. Since its introduction years ago, literally thousands of talented Astronomers, graphics designers, software developers and teachers have realized its potential and voluntarily joined the Celestia development group. Contributing their talents for free on their own time, they have strived to make Celestia not just a good space simulation program, but the best Astronomy program a teacher or student could possibly hope for.

That effort has succeeded. Today, Celestia is of such high resolution graphics and content (over 18 GB of addons) that NASA, ESA and most of the world's astronomical observatories and universities use it routinely. It has been downloaded for free millions of times worldwide. However, it is a complex program to master (lots of key commands), and the universe is a very big place, with lots of destinations that its developers have created, drawn and animated. To use it for education, what Celestia needed was a set of easy to follow lesson plans that school kids and teachers could use around the world to study Astronomy, while actually cruising space in their own hyperdrive spaceship.

In 2004, I joined the Celestia development group as a teacher volunteer to create those lessons. Working with dozens of gifted volunteers from every discipline over the next 5 years, I wrote and designed a set of 12 educational journeys through space to be used by teachers to bring their students into space in an exciting interactive way. Piloting their own spaceship, students get to fly to over 400 destinations, and learn Astronomy as they go. No canned video clips here ... but actual interactive trips to fly by or orbit galaxies, stars, black holes, pulsars, nebula, supernova, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and over 50 spacecraft, real and imagined.

The Celestia Educational Activities take over 40 hours to complete, and are offered for FREE to anyone who wants them. They are also provided on my website as a convenient DVD or CD, for a modest fee only. I am pleased to report that they have been downloaded over 60,000 times, and are now in use in both high schools and universities in over 25 countries.

The video I am submitting for this Filmmaker Challenge is a 3-minute HD introduction to Celestia Education choreographed to powerful music, showing you and the viewing audience the level of quality and sophistication this amazing astronomy education program can offer kids of all ages. All of the scenes in the video are from the educational journeys.

Your contest is seeking innovation and invention. Now imagine ... if you were signed up as a 16 - 20 yr old in an Astronomy class to learn about our amazing universe ... would you not want to leave your school seat on occasion, and using the power of computers, virtually visit the universe on your own ... while piloting your own spaceship in any direction you chose, at any speed, and at any time in history? I sure would! So would my students. In my own high school, my Astronomy course is the most popular science elective in the history of the school ... because of Celestia. That reward in student satisfaction is why I have spent over 3,000 man-hours developing and updating these educational journeys, for free ... on my own time (to the displeasure of my wife!)

Frank, I would really like to use one of your videos at one of my church functions. I would want to add in some additional text and possibly remove or cover up some of the existing text with new text. Would this be possible? Is there another way to contact you? My email is jeremy.b.espinoza@gmail.com

I have released a new revised Introduction to Biology in beautiful high definition. This augments/replaces my prior video on the same topic of two years ago. Enjoy.
