1. The stunning, BBC documentary series, ‘Thailand: Earth’s Tropical Paradise’ is particularly praiseworthy, because, it positively highlights the exemplary way in which Thais harmoniously co-exit with wildlife and benefit from the symbioses so established, as a consequence of the nation’s Buddhist heritage. As the series vividly illustrates, Thailand’s impressive and enviable record on nature conservation in the last four decades should be an invaluable example to all other nations, besides the lessons we can learn from the humble and compassionate, Thai way of life.

This video is intended to give a taste of the documentary, as a way of encouraging as many to watch the series on BBC Store:

  2. Warning: This video contains strong language and sexually suggestive imagery that are suitable only for mature audiences.

‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ is a surprisingly terrific movie indeed and is one of the finest comedies ever to come from Hollywood. Based on the satirical memoir, ‘The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan’ by the journalist Kim Baker, it is a fascinating and rare insight into the cutthroat world of war correspondence, as observed in real life by an insider, more intriguingly, a liberated woman who finds herself at the deep end in an environment particularly hostile to women. Full of ironic wit and acerbic humour, of the kind that is better appreciated this side of the pond than in the states, perhaps the reason behind the unfavourable critical response there, it is an incessantly hilarious, yet subtly moving, and ultimately uplifting chronicle of life behind the TV camera in war-ravaged, Afghanistan, during the latter stages of the military occupation by the US and her allies. With a scintillating and career-defining performance from Tina Fey, it is a perfectly balanced production, that the directors Glenn Ficarra & John Requa helm with exquisite understatement, restraint, simplicity and precision. The fact that the movie was largely and imperceptibly shot in New Mexico is a testament to the expertise of everyone involved.

In this featurette, which we post here as a way of encouraging more to see this remarkable film, the cast and crew discuss the making of ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ in some fascinating detail.

  3. One of the highlights in the UK, festive TV schedule this year was ‘Wild Tales from the Village’, an ingenious and quite funny documentary from the BBC. Photographed over a year in a rustic village in rural France, it is a quirky chronicle of the interactions between the villagers and wildlife, much of which has rarely been filmed before. The at times uneasy, yet largely amicable rapport the often cheeky, wild animals here have with people is enchanting and fascinating, making the documentary a must see for nature lovers. The narrator, Tcheky Karyo’s seductive, French accent should be alluring enough to keep anyone else amused throughout.

For UK viewers only, the programme is available to watch free until 24th January on the BBC iPlayer. It should be available internationally for digital download and on disk soon enough:

  4. Julio Medem, the renowned, Basque director, is simply unique in his contribution to cinema. His boundless imagination has brought us some of the most rewarding experiences in the history of the industry. From his début, ‘Vacas’ (1992) to the latest, ‘Ma Ma’ (2015), each of his eight features so far is a masterwork in groundbreaking visual and narrative experimentation. His imagery is always stunning in exquisite details of light, shade and hue, a product of intricate set and natural lighting design. Above all, his films are challenging, provocative and ultimately poignant explorations of the realities of life, but with an inimitable sense of ironic wit, that verges on the subversive in some cases.

In this tribute to one of the most creative directors working today, we have sampled some of the most memorable sequences from Medem’s movies, as a way of promoting his exemplary work to a wider audience.

  5. The word groundbreaking doesn’t go far enough to describe the impact ’Breaking Bad’ has had not just on TV, but on cinema as a whole. It set a standard by which all subsequent movies in any medium would be judged by critics as well as by the public. As addictive as a Class A drug, the 47-hour long series has captivated, thrilled, shocked, provoked and deeply moved viewers right across the world, making it the most successful TV production ever. Above all, it is a scathingly critical, social commentary about the greed that fuels the consumerist capitalism and the consequent erosion of the value and meaning to human life.

Entirely made from two, exceptional fan videos for the series, this abstract is our way of celebrating ’Breaking Bad’ and the ingenious team that brought it to life, in particular, the visionary creator, Vince Gilligan.
