Biological and Clinical Implications of Immune System Variation

The immune system is one of the major life‐sustaining systems in advanced organisms,
employing dozens if not hundreds of distinct cell types and molecules to orchestrate layers of defense mechanisms, and immune‐related genes occupy more than 5% of the human genome. Although research on the immune system has thrived for over one hundred years, only recently has there begun to emerge a true “systems” approach. This has partly been driven by new technologies that allow vast amounts of information to be gleaned from immune cells and tissues and by the need to develop better ways to model human immune system function in health and disease. In this talk I will discuss the data revolution sweeping through basic and clinical immunology research, and the new frontiers for questioning they open.
