We meet a procession of goddess Kamakshi in the streets of Kanchipuram, the ’golden town’ of Tamilnadu, South India. She returns from her Friday-evening rounds back into the courtyard of her temple. There, priests install her comfortably in a golden chariot. Devotees throng close to catch the privilege of pulling her chariot by hand; the temple elephant, musicians and fireworks join in this festive circumambulation. Finally, she holds court: rested, cleansed, adorned and fed, she bestows Grace by sharing her kumkumam powder.
Paramparai Foundation (paramparai.eu) captured these intense moments of devotion with the permission of Sri Kamakoti Peeta, in 2003 and 2007. This documentary is part of an interactive DVD commissioned by Museum Rietberg for the Exhibition on Shiva Nataraja (2008).
