1. Friday Event Lecture at The Glasgow School of Art on 26 Oct 2007 || Hayley Newman is “interested in performance and ‘liveness', what it means to be an artist and performer, chronicler, archivist, theorist and enthusiast.” Her current interest is in ‘Rubbernecking’ - a word that describes the act of slowing down, craning the neck and straining to look - which involves her in a series of trips to places reported in the daily news. In this presentation Newman will talk about her own work, considering how Performance might be analysed through performative strategies such as re-performing, staging documents and other reflexive acts. Hayley Newman studied at Middlesex University before gaining a Higher Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at the Slade School of Art. She lives and works in London and is represented by Matt’s Gallery.

Fragments of a letter to a child unborn

Using gesture and textual fragments, unknown guilt, fear and the strangeness of singular becoming plural are retold as a voiceless, anonymous narrative. Text becomes the body for a hand in an umbilical dilemma, portraying the thoughts of a young woman going through an emotional trauma, facing abortion.

Collection Martin (http://www.sammlung-martin.de): The artistic practice of Raphaela Vogel (born 1988 in Nuremberg) can perhaps best be characterized as a her permanently playing with all available contemporary forms of image recording and playback. In her video installations Vogel always reveals the process of recording the used footage, usually involving herself in various performative settings. During the editing process different perspectives of the same scene, simultaneities, random jumps in time, apparent technical breakdowns while shooting or technical errors are combined to a whole in hectically cut sequences which seem to exceed our capacity of perception. Despite their very contemporary effect and great openness these videos reveal a personal, almost intimate access to the technologies used and show, merely incidentally, how unstable and fragile the seemingly perfect surfaces and devices really are.
We are pleased to be able to show the video Documentary Thaumatrop which was created specifically for its presentation on Vimeo. The video loop is a documentation and an advancement of the work Thaumatrop that was on show as part of the exhibition Collctor's View, curated by Herbert Martin (vimeo.com/84674837) in Oechsner Gallery in Nuremberg in 2013.
