1. CASP serves as an operationally-focused, academic think tank that informs the Coast Guard, other federal agencies, academia, and international communities about the complexities of this unique region. Through collaborative efforts, the Center promotes effective solutions to address present and future Arctic maritime challenges as the Coast Guard increases its Arctic presence. Having an endowed chair at the Academy that focuses strictly on the Arctic will enable CASP to establish permanence in Arctic academic circles, as well as, increase awareness at the Academy of the Arctic’s importance. The Chair will also develop and teach courses in ocean/maritime policy and Arctic policy and lead capstone research projects and independent studies related to Arctic research specialties and missions.

This project is part of the $30,000,000 All Present campaign, an endeavor unprecedented in the USCGA Alumni Association’s history, includes 15 projects that align with the Coast Guard Academy’s strategic goals to develop professional excellence, ensure academic excellence, and promote athletics and physical excellence. 3. The Otto Graham Hall of Athletic Excellence in Billard Hall pays tribute to the history of Coast Guard Academy athletics, great teams, outstanding individual athletes, as well as, the pioneers of men’s and women’s sports via a collection of world-class displays. In addition, the CGA Athletic Hall of Fame moved from Roland Hall to this new location and received a much-needed cosmetic upgrade.

Whether it’s the first undefeated football team, the women’s volleyball or men’s basketball team that advanced to the Elite Eight, or the National Champion women’s sailing team, the Academy’s tradition of excellence is on display throughout the Hall. This, and a great deal more, is now viewed by cadets on a daily basis, while alumni and Academy friends who return are also able to feel pride in the Academy’s athletic legacy now on display.

  4. For over 10 years, the Loy IFL has grown from a single endowed chair into a dynamic team that supplements and complements the faculty, staff and coaches throughout the variety of leadership programs and initiatives at the Academy. The Loy IFL has a unique ability to integrate efforts across the military, academic and athletic domains through their research, programs and assessment via their LEAD framework: Learn from theory, Experience through practice, Analyze using reflection, and Deepen understanding through mentoring. LEAD concepts guide the leadership development of cadets as part of the larger Coast Guard Leadership Development Framework focused on “Leading Self” and “Leading Others.”

  5. While CGA’s athletic facilities have improved significantly in the last several years, the current strength and conditioning spaces leave much to be desired – in terms of size, capacity, equipment and locations. In comparison to our DIII counterparts, our facilities make it more difficult to recruit cadet-athletes, as well as, adequately train current athletes to remain competitive.

A larger facility will meet the strength and conditioning interests and needs of the Corps of Cadets as a whole, and specifically for members of varsity and club athletic teams. It will improve the stature of the CGA athletic program in the eyes of prospective cadets. The new center will not only level the playing field with our DIII counterparts, but will also contribute to the Academy’s strategic goal of building a culture that ensures success in competition, leadership development, and lifelong wellness.
