'Watch & Wander through the Elphen Chronicles by Paul Taggart'

  1. Welcome to Watch & Wander through Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles. You join us in our studio, where you can peek over my shoulder as I work on some of the Story Vignettes in Chapter Seven of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’.

This is our seventh set of behind-the-scenes videos, in which we share the painting process that I use for these Story Vignettes, as well as Free-to-View, Bonus Features showing my preparatory work and drawings; along with some short clips from Sunita’s first meeting with us, as she explained her initial designs for the actual pages within the book. At this point Sunita revealed her vision for the book, which centred on this additional collection of occasional paintings.

More than one hundred paintings have been created to accompany the running text, all produced using a unique oil painting method that I developed specifically for this extensive portfolio of Story Vignettes.

At the time of filming this Welcome to Chapter Seven, you get to see me working at my easel, on two vignettes, from the first strokes of drawing-out, to the final, finishing touches and highlights. More will follow in future updates.

Firstly you see Webstrand holding an Elphen Star Gem, one that holds the future for a very special recipient; all of which is revealed in the ensuing events, recorded in Chapters 8 and 9 – the very essence of this chronicling of Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer.

This is an intense and significant chapter, in which you witness the rare spectacle of battle-ready Elphen, in Episode 2 of this set of videos, transformed with the purpose of routing a swarm of Shades, to successfully complete their journey to the Jade Lake.

These vignettes are quite different to my Masterworks oil paintings - one of which you can watch being created from the very first drawing-out stage, to the final finishing highlights in another series of Watch & Wander. This Masterworks is destined to be the Artist’s Legacy First Edition book jacket - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles

Watch out for the Free-to-View, Bonus Features and Trailer in that series too, in which you get to see more of these large Masterworks oil paintings – each of which appears as a full-plate within the chapters of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/243564274

There are thirteen large Masterworks oil paintings and four smaller Masterworks in oils and something rather special for the final page of the final chapter, Chapter Nine.

Every aspect of this project is influenced by the creative contribution of every one of us who is working on the printed book, films and music, not to mention other elements that are in production, such as the Video-Book. Have you seen our Bonus Feature in which we share the work of Textile Artist, Ruth Black on my unique Elphen waistcoat? The waistcoat itself will be revealed when we release the Video-Book version of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/242025844

Do be sure to watch the Bonus Features in the Masterworks, Watch & Wander through the Elphen Chronicles, because you also get to join in our plans for the Elphen Soundscape at one of our earliest get-togethers with Liza Mulholland – more to follow shortly as work on the music progresses - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/246948711

We are all delighted to share with you the creative work that has gone into this highly illustrated fantastical story in which I chronicle a special event in the life of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ - one that has been more than fifteen years in the making; the second book in my Elphen Chronicles.

You may be a collector of artworks or illustrated books, or someone who is intrigued by the process involved; perhaps a painter yourself. Whatever your reason for joining us in this behind-the-scenes peek into our world, we do hope you enjoy our various Elphen Chronicles series.

Are you a painter? Would you like to extend your painting repertoire by trying out my unique method? If you’ve watched the trailer for Chapter 1 you will have heard me describe the five distinct ‘painting’ stages in the preparation of each vignette – with the final layer being reliant on the traditional oil painting technique of glazing - vimeo.com/ondemand/oilglazes

It gives us the greatest pleasure to share this unique technique in a detailed, step-by-step video tutorial Workshop.

We look forward to your company and, as always, this comes with best wishes from Eileen and myself, not to mention, Sunita, Liza, Webstrand and Starfire.

  3. Welcome to Watch & Wander through Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles. You join us in our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, where you can peek over my shoulder as I work on some of the Story Vignettes in Chapter Six of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’.

This is our sixth set of behind-the-scenes videos, in which we share the painting process that I use for these Story Vignettes, as well as Free-to-View, Bonus Features showing my preparatory work and drawings; along with some short clips from Sunita’s first meeting with us, as she explained her initial designs for the actual pages within the book. At this point Sunita revealed her vision for the book, which centred on this additional collection of occasional paintings.

As our Design Director, Sunita Gahir, is responsible for bringing ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ to life on the pages of the book. This process started with Sunita, who translated my original Masterworks oil paintings and manuscript into many initial thoughts, before finally settling on one to discuss with us.

Firstly you see Webstrand and Starfire in the Elphen Armoury, as final preparations are being carried out for their upcoming quest to the Jade Lake - an essential journey; one that presents many dangers, but one that is critical in ensuring the well-being and continuance of Elphen.

This is a dark chapter, in which you are introduced to the Shades, in Episode 2 of this set of videos - where you can see a Shade emerging from its hideous camouflage.

  5. Welcome to Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles and this FREE-TO-VIEW Bonus Feature in which we take you behind-the-scenes in our plans for the Elphen Soundscape at one of our earliest get-togethers with Liza Mulholland (Music Director & Producer), to whom we owe our gratitude for so-willingly joining as a principal collaborator - a magical day for us, as we listened to Liza’s thoughts and initial tinklings on the keyboard (or as she expresses it, her ‘noodlings’). We will be sharing more as the Elphen Soundscape continues to develop and when we record the first version (which is destined for the Video Book).

Liza is bringing her considerable talents as a professional musician, composer and singer/songwriter and our initial thoughts for a single Elphen song, is now expanding to encompass much, much more, as you will gather from watching this Bonus Feature. The purpose of Watch & Wander through Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles, is to share with you some of the process which takes us from initial thoughts, through to the finished result in the various elements that are developing as this project progresses. Here you are privy to Liza’s thought process and get to hear some of her initial musical ideas, played out on keyboard and accordion. We had the most enjoyable day with Liza and it really is a delight to share this with you.

You will come to appreciate that this is ‘painting with music’, as you listen to Liza explain her creative interpretation of my original artworks and the entire book, which she has read time and again.

This is one of many FREE-TO-VIEW Bonus Features, in which we invite you to peek into the process of the various elements that accompany my second book in the Elphen Chronicles.

Don’t miss out on the fascinating journey that we’re enjoying with Ruth Black (Textile Artist) as she sets about making my unique Elphen waistcoat in this Bonus Feature ‘Making Paul’s Waistcoat’ - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/242025844

You will progressively discover that ‘Webstrand – the Tooth Gatherer’ is so much more than just one book, as we share more with you, from fellow artists, whom we invite to work with us.

Welcome to my studio and the ‘Elphen Chronicles’ by Paul Taggart …

Being a solitary child I spent many hours alone in my grandmother’s garden. One heavily overgrown area particularly entranced me, for within its depths lay a circular swathe of fine green grass. By sitting at its centre and half closing my eyes I would be enchanted to find myself encircled by blue butterflies that appeared as if from nowhere.

The magic of these exquisite creatures never left me and a chance request from one of our personal friends for a fairy painting encouraged me to fulfill the dream that had been with me ever since those childhood days.

Which is how, over twenty years ago, I found myself bringing to life something that had gripped my imagination since childhood, a new genre of mysterious winged creatures. During the light of day I would take up my brush and palette to work on the paintings that were enchanting me. As I painted I found the story of Elphen developing in my head, so that once the light had gone from the day I would swap brush and palette for pen and paper to capture their lives.

For the months I was engaged in capturing these new creatures in paintings, I became so engrossed that all other paintings and books were forsaken, in order to free my mind to concentrate on completing the first book in the Elphen Chronicles.

Welcome to my easel and the world of Webstrand …

Since publishing Book 1, I have portrayed more and more Elphen, written a number of short stories and am in the process of completing the final oil paintings for Book 2, started some fifteen years ago. Once again much of my work as a Fine Artist was set to one side as this labour of love took hold of my brushes, paint and palette.

I found myself inhabiting this world, a world whose pull was so strong that it emerged before me on the surface of each painting, as if allowing me to enter and experience it for myself.

The story rewrote itself, time and again; draft after draft.

Painting after painting, the collection grew; I found myself working on four at any given time.

Five years on and here you join me as I work on one of the final paintings …

A little over twenty years ago we embarked on the first phase of a special project, Book 1 in my ‘Elphen Chronicles’. Now, after working intensely over the past five years on a substantial collection of large oil paintings, we are looking forward to sharing the second phase of this project, which centres on Book 2.

All will be gradually revealed over the coming months through our occasional newsletter and FB etc.
