A Silent Transformation is a documentary film about a movement towards a post-Capitalist future. With the current system leaving the most vulnerable members of society behind, with the powerful forces conceiving of everything as a commodity from which to extract value, the co-operative movement pursues a different vision. A vision that radically challenges commonly-held notions about work, ownership, entrepreneurship, democracy and collective agency. A vision that is becoming a lived reality in communities across Canada. A vision that is engaging ordinary Canadians to take charge of their economic future. While progressive movements, from Occupy Wall Street to Black Lives Matter, have been pressing for political change, the co-operative movement has been revolutionizing the economy through A Silent Transformation.

  3. In his forty years working with impoverished American communities, John McKnight witnessed incredible social change at the grassroots. He discovered that the majority of the solutions to issues like unwanted teenage pregnancy and crime depended on empowering local citizens and building relationships at the community level. Although social innovations disrupt the status quo in boundary-breaking and sector-spanning ways, change begins with the individual and their surrounding network.

  5. Raj Patel, the author of The Value of Nothing and Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, spoke to a gathering of over 350 people at the 2010 National Summit on a People-Centred Economy in Ottawa on May 30, 2010. Raj shared some examples of democratic responses that can lead to more sustainable and equitable systems in the wake of market failure.

He opened his speech with the following remark:
“When Alan Greenspan gets up and admits that the core idea behind free market fundamentalism is flawed most people skipped over it because it would be too big to imagine what a different kind of economy would be like and that’s why it is such an honour for me to be sitting in a room full of people who have that imagination and who have the capacity to understand that what we need to do is go beyond capitalism.”
