Very few materials are more durable than fired clay, and its remains provide essential evidence in the reconstruction of human histories around the globe. This ceramic record tells us stories that are as varied as they are fascinating and profound, allowing us not only to assign dates to societies of all descriptions and ages but also to understand how they organised themselves, how technically accomplished they were and what inspired them.

Each ceramic object in its own way is deeply revealing about the world in which it was born and, at a time when our indigenous ceramic industry atrophies, gives hope that ceramics will continue to matter and to inspire long into the future.
