  3. EDN Forum 'Dance in changing Europe and beyond Europe' 11th and 12 May 2018 at Hellerau in Dresden, Germany

'To develop the next generation of arts leaders requires nothing less than a culture shift and systemic change. This will only come about through partnership, collaboration and shared leadership. We need to work together“. (Rosalyn Rubenstein from Rubenstein & Associates).

As we, EDN, grow, enriched by our diversity, we learn; gaining knowledge and generating intelligence that contribute to our resilience as a dynamic, transnational network operating in changing social,
economic and political circumstances. We need to think differently, to make changes and to assess what risks we may be prepared to take together in facing new challenges across Europe and beyond.

We aim to extend our reach encouraging dialogue, to promote and communicate the value of dance as a collaborative artistic practice, and being open and flexible to new global challenges facing dance and civil society throughout Europe and beyond its borders.

The EDN forum in Hellerau was organised as a performative congress and will take place during a festival with solos and duos including different generations of artists.

This video presents extracts of the following Forum programme:

    Friday 11th May
Morning Panel discussion 'Expanding the network beyond Europe' dedicated to continue and develop the dialogue that EDN started with the outreaches to Chile, Canada, Japan, and Hong kong. How to include new members outside Europe without altering our mandate?
Which networks are being created by our colleagues oversea? What kind of dance projects can arise from these encounters? How can EDN connect artists and presenters in this dialogue? How to facilitate artists’ mobility on a vast territory, as Europe tends to close itself? Which artists work beyond the
    'normal' European circuit and network?

    Francine Bernier (Agora Montreal)
    Javiera Peón-Veiga (NAVE, Santiago)
    Anna Chan (Hongkong)
    Pia Krämer (EDN)
    Lisi Estaras (choreographer and dancer)
    Avatara Ayuso (choreographer and dancer)
    Constanza Macras (choreographer)
    Moderation: Betsy Gregory

Afternoon Round table: Discussion between artists, presenters and others.
Let´s reflect on the values generated by artists and their 'sale'. The theme of values could relate also to their migrant mobility. Invite all participants to see how they impact the cities and citizens where they (the dance artists) live, teach, research and present their creations.
Participants: Joachim Bernauer (Goethe Institut München)
Cathy Levy (National Art Center Canada)
    Artists from the EDN context
    Moderation: Betsy Gregory

    Evening performances:
    - Rui Horta
    - Panaibra Gabriel Canda (aprox. 60 min.)
    - Amancio Gonzalez/Carlotta Sagna / General rehearsal

    Saturday 12th May

    Morning panel: What kind of body is needed, thought of? Presentation/representation of the body;
    colonisation/decolonisation; bodies in crises, the permeable body; the transformative body;
the permeable institution/dance house, the creations of transnational narratives, a new
    form of 'worldliness' (Mbembe).

“Do we live in an age of endless self contemplation and self curation? Our own body, our own spectacle, our own audience?“ (Achille Mbembe)

    Participants: Isabelle van Grimde (Montreal)
    Panaibra Gabriel Canda (Mosambik)
    Rui Horta (Portugal)
    Gerard Bester (Hillbrow Theatre, Johannesburg)
Marcio Abreu (Cia. Brasileira de teatro, Curitiba/Rio, Brazil)
    Abdel Marc Camara (Ivory Coast)
    Moderation: Bettina Masuch

Afternoon Participative lecture Performance 'My body of coming forth by day' by Olivier Dubois

Afternoon lecture-presentation Isabelle van Grimde on her project 'Eve 2050'
Eve 2050 invites audiences to engage in an artistic, aesthetic and ethical reflection on the future of human beings and the body in an age of digital technology, biomedical advances and artificial intelligence.

This Atelier was designed to enable participants to explore the current state of the contemporary dance scenes in Central Europe post-soviet countries, to understand their similarities and differences as well as the potential for international collaborations.

Aiming at opening doors for future and better cooperation between Central and Eastern Europe countries and the rest of Europe, this Atelier brought together EDN members, dance artists, local audience, critics and politicians. All discussions were moderated by Betsy Gregory and Guy Cools.

Acknowledging that mapping and common understanding are long-term processes, the participants started with an overview of the situation of Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland, as well as Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

Organised by Tanec Praha and European Dancehouse Network (EDN) in the framework of the Czech Dance Platform.

  5. Artistic works created in conversation with the environment acted as a tool for loosening and rearranging existing rhetoric and frames of thinking regarding the region and helped to create an inspirational and inclusive third space for discussion regarding the village of Androlikou and surrounding area.
