My video essay explores the lighting in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien. Although the film Alien has been remade many times, and the technology improves as the saga goes along; I believe the original Alien is so notable because of the lighting tools they implement Lighting changes, not the fact that they had any fancy technology or editing software. This is especially fascinating when considering that the film is essentially a ‘monster movie’, however the spectacle of the Alien itself doesn’t seem to be all that scary. Some specific lighting tools/decisions I discuss in my video essay include: the drastic variation in tone and color between lighting changes, the repetitive presence of flashing lights/strobe, the overwhelming darkness and shadows seen in many scenes, and the placement of practical lights in the frame to distract the viewing audience.
